Moth Control

All moths, including Indian Meal Moths, Grain Moths, Flour Moths (Pantry Moths) and Clothing Moths, love to live in dark and humid places where nobody disturbs them for long periods. This gives them the time and freedom to destroy our clothes and food.

Certain moth species can do incredible damage to property such as clothes, carpets or food. Moths can also cause a negative impact on personal wellbeing - fear of moths is a fairly common phobia.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moth Control & Infestations

I’ve just spotted moths in my wardrobe — what should I do first? Remove any infested clothes, wash or dry-clean them at a high temperature (checking the label first), and vacuum the wardrobe thoroughly. Then, arrange a professional inspection to make sure the problem doesn’t spread.

Are moths in my house harmful or just annoying? While they don’t bite or spread disease, moth larvae can seriously damage clothes, carpets, and soft furnishings, which makes quick action important.

Can I get rid of moths using sprays from the shop? Shop-bought sprays can help reduce adult moths, but they rarely kill hidden eggs and larvae. A professional treatment targets all life stages and stops the infestation properly.

How long does a moth treatment usually take? A professional moth treatment typically involves a 1–2 hour application process, followed by a necessary safe re-entry period (on average, of 4 hours). Some cases may need follow-up visits to break the breeding cycle.

How many types of moths are there? There are approximately 160,000 described species of moths worldwide. Because many are difficult to identify and new ones are continuously discovered, taxonomists estimate the true global total could be closer to 500,000 species. In the UK alone, there are around 2,500 species.

What is the fastest way to get rid of moths in a home? The fastest way to eliminate household moths is to target the root of the infestation. First, identify if you are dealing with pantry moths (infesting food) or clothes moths (infesting textiles). Immediately discard the source items, thoroughly vacuum the surrounding areas to remove eggs, and use pheromone traps to capture adult flying moths.

Can you permanently get rid of moths? Completely eliminating moths is difficult, but you can permanently get rid of an infestation through persistence. Success requires breaking their breeding cycle by tossing infested goods, deep-cleaning dark areas, and applying insecticides or natural deterrents to prevent them from returning.

Why have I suddenly got lots of moths in my house? You suddenly have moths in your house because either an infestation of clothes moths or pantry moths (Indian Meal Moths) has hatched from hidden eggs. They were likely brought in on contaminated items like bulk grains, second-hand clothing, or furniture, and a recent rise in temperature likely triggered their life cycle, prompting adult moths to emerge.
