BPCA Accredited Pest Management for Food & Beverage Processing Manufacturers

Zero risk, maximum results: Free site audit for new commercial clients

PGM helps manufacturers protect food safety, maintain audit compliance, prevent costly production disruption and safeguard brand reputation. Our expert pest technicians are BPCA and NPTA accredited, hold RSPH Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, and use an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to prevent pest problems before they occur. Through routine inspections, monitoring, proofing advice and targeted treatments, we help the food manufacturing sector reduce risk, and compliance-focused solutions.

Common Pest Risks in Food Manufacturing & Beverage Production

Common Pest Risks in Food Manufacturing & Beverage Production

Food manufacturing environments provide ideal conditions for pests, with constant access to food sources, moisture, warmth and shelter. Without an effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme, even minor pest activity can lead to contamination risks, failed audits, production delays and damage to your reputation. Our specialists help food manufacturers, processors, breweries and beverage producers identify and control pest risks before they become costly problems.

Pest Proofing for Food Manufacturing Facilities

Effective pest management starts long before pests enter your premises. Pest proofing is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce the risk of infestations, helping protect food safety, maintain compliance and minimise disruption to production.

Food manufacturing sites are constantly receiving deliveries, moving goods and operating complex machinery, creating numerous potential entry points for rodents, insects and birds. Identifying and eliminating these vulnerabilities forms a key part of our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.

Why Pest Proofing Matters

A proactive pest proofing programme can significantly reduce the likelihood of infestations, protecting your facility before pests become established. Combined with regular inspections and monitoring, effective proofing helps support food safety standards, reduce reliance on pesticides and demonstrate a preventative approach during audits.

Our specialist RSPH pest technicians provide practical pest proofing recommendations tailored to your premises, helping food manufacturers, processors and breweries strengthen their first line of defence against pests.

Common Pest Entry Points

Even well-maintained food production facilities can develop weaknesses that allow pests to gain access.

Loading bays inspected

Loading Bays & Dock Levellers

Frequent deliveries, open loading doors and damaged dock levellers provide easy access for rodents, birds and flying insects. These high-traffic areas should be regularly inspected and maintained to reduce pest risks.

Roller Shutter Doors

Poorly fitting or damaged roller shutter doors can leave gaps large enough for rodents to enter. Worn seals and prolonged periods with doors left open also increase the likelihood of pest activity.

Pipe & Cable Penetrations

Small gaps around pipework, electrical cables and service penetrations are often overlooked during construction or maintenance works. Mice can enter through gaps as small as 6mm, making effective sealing essential.

Drainage Systems

Damaged drains, inspection chambers and drainage connections can provide concealed access routes for rats. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance help reduce the risk of rodents entering production facilities through underground drainage networks.

Ventilation & Air Handling Systems

Air vents and ventilation openings require suitable screening to prevent birds and insects entering buildings while maintaining adequate airflow for production environments.

Roof Junctions & Building Fabric

Defective roof junctions, damaged cladding, gaps beneath roof sheets and deteriorating building fabric can all provide access points for birds and rodents. Routine inspections help identify defects before they become pest problems.

Food Safety, Compliance & Audit Support

Maintaining the highest standards of food safety requires more than simply responding to pest activity. Food manufacturers, processors, breweries and beverage producers need a proactive pest management programme that supports hygiene, protects production and demonstrates due diligence during audits and inspections.

Our services are designed to support businesses working towards, or maintaining, recognised food safety standards including:

  • BRCGS Global Food Safety Standard

  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)

  • SALSA (Safe and Local Supplier Approval)

  • Food Safety Act 1990

  • Environmental Health requirements

Did you know?

A single pest sighting can result in product contamination, increased corrective actions, production downtime and failed food safety audits. A preventative Integrated Pest Management programme helps identify risks early, reducing the likelihood of costly disruption.

Whilst we are not food safety auditors, our detailed pest inspections, documented recommendations and preventative approach provide valuable evidence that your business is actively managing pest risks as part of its wider food safety management system.

3. Protect

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a proactive, preventative approach by identifying pest risks before they develop into infestations, PGM help businesses protect their products, premises and reputation.

1. Site Inspection

We begin with a comprehensive inspection of your food manufacturing facility, assessing current pest activity, operational processes and areas of potential vulnerability. This includes raw ingredient storage, production lines, packaging halls, warehouses, loading bays, waste compounds, external areas, drainage systems and the building fabric.

2. Risk Assessment

Our RSPH Level 3 qualified technicians carry out a detailed pest risk assessment, identifying factors that could affect food safety, product integrity, regulatory compliance and business operations. We also assess seasonal pest pressures, supplier risks and potential entry points throughout the production process.

3. Tailored Plan

Using the findings from our inspection, we develop a bespoke Integrated Pest Management programme in accordance with BPCA Best Practice. Every plan is tailored to your manufacturing processes, focusing on prevention, pest proofing, monitoring and targeted control measures that support HACCP, BRCGS, SALSA and retailer audit requirements.

4. Monitoring

Continuous monitoring provides early warning of pest activity before it becomes a serious issue. We carry out scheduled inspections, maintain discreet monitoring systems and provide detailed digital reporting, giving quality managers and production teams complete visibility of pest risks and demonstrating due diligence during audits.

5. Prevention

Prevention is at the heart of everything we do. We work alongside your team to improve housekeeping, waste management, stock rotation, pest proofing and operational practices, reducing pest attractants and eliminating potential access points. Our proactive approach helps protect food safety, minimise production downtime and maintain compliance throughout your facility.

Pest Control FAQs for Food Manufacturing Sites

Is a professional pest control contract a legal requirement? Yes. While UK law (the Food Safety Act 1990 and EC Regulation 852/2004) does not explicitly name "contracts", it mandates that food premises must prevent pest contamination. Failing to prove an active, professional system will result in failed Environmental Health Officer (EHO) inspections, severe fines, or forced closure via a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice

What documentation must be available on-site for an audit? Auditors expect a comprehensive, up-to-date pest control logbook. This must contain an interactive site plan marking all monitoring points, technical data sheets (MSDS/COSHH), technician qualifications, field biologist reports, pest sighting logs, and clear trend analysis data.

How often should a food factory be inspected? Food manufacturing facilities require a minimum of 8 to 12 routine inspections per year, though high-risk environments often mandate bi-weekly or weekly checks. Additionally, independent Field Biologist audits are required at least once or twice a year to satisfy BRCGS guidelines.

Can toxic rodent bait be used inside the production area? No. BRCGS and supermarket codes strictly forbid the use of toxic rodenticides inside food handling or production areas during routine monitoring to prevent cross-contamination. Inside the facility, only non-toxic monitoring baits, mechanical traps, or electronic indicators are permitted. Toxic baits are restricted strictly to external perimeter walls.

Why are electric grid fly killers banned in production zones? Traditional "zapper" fly killers cause insects to explode, projecting fragments up to several metres into open food lines. High-compliance production areas must exclusively use silent glue-board fly control units that safely capture and contain intact insects.

Do you provide on-site pest awareness training for our staff? Yes, PGM provide fully certified, audit-compliant on-site pest awareness training for your staff. As a BPCA-accredited company, our training programs are rigorously aligned with British Standard EN16636 and designed to help your facility meet the highest regulatory and third-party audit standards, including BRCGS Issue 9, SALSA, and major UK supermarket codes of practice.

What does a pest control service for food manufacturing sites include? Risk assessment, scheduled monitoring, preventative treatments, and audit-ready reporting to support compliance.

What is your response time if pest activity is detected in our food manufacturing site? Priority response is provided to food production and brewery manufacturing sites across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, with attendance scheduled urgently following notification. Interim control measures and advice are given to maintain compliance and minimise risk until treatment is completed.
