It’s important to note that pest controllers do not catch and release moles. Anyone claiming to do so is either misinformed or not following proper guidance. Moles are solitary and highly territorial, so relocation causes significant distress. Live tube traps also present welfare issues, as the animal must be attended to immediately once trapped; otherwise, it can remain confined for an extended period, which is inhumane.
Unfortunately, humane dispatch is the only appropriate control method. For this reason, people are usually advised to tolerate moles where possible, and only proceed with humane dispatch when absolutely necessary. Mole FAQs ↗

Control Measures
-
Trapping is possibly the most successful methods (there are a wide variety of traps available)

Aluminium phosphides (gassing) is also used but this must be under strict conditions (away from livestock, water courses and humans) and MUST be carried out by a qualified and trained professional
Frequently asked questions about mole control and infestations
What are the signs of a mole infestation in my garden or lawn?
Moles create visible molehills, tunnels, and ridges in your soil. You may notice raised lines of soil, dead patches of grass, or uneven terrain caused by their burrowing. Early detection helps prevent extensive damage to lawns, flower beds, and vegetable gardens. Regular monitoring and inspection of soft, moist soil areas is recommended.
Are mole control methods safe for pets and children?
Yes, many modern mole control options are safe and pet-friendly, including traps, repellents, and natural deterrents. Professional mole control services use targeted, eco-friendly solutions that protect your family, pets, and beneficial wildlife while effectively managing moles.
How long does it take to get rid of moles permanently?
The duration depends on the size of the infestation and the treatment method. Professional mole control often shows results in 2–4 weeks, as active tunnels are treated and preventatve measures are implemented.
Why are moles so common in Herefordshire gardens?
Herefordshire’s rich, loamy soils and frequent rainfall create perfect conditions for moles. They thrive in vegetable gardens, orchards, and soft lawns, where food like grubs and worms is plentiful. Moles are a natural part of the countryside, but left unchecked, they can damage lawns and flower beds.
What’s the best way to get rid of moles in Worcestershire?
The most effective approach combines: Humane professional trapping – tailored for local mole activity. Ultrasonic or vibration repellents – effective in Herefordshire’s soil types. Garden management – reducing insects and grubs that attract moles. A local expert knows the area’s soil and seasonal patterns, making removal faster and more permanent.
