  • Got Cockroaches? We’ve got it covered!

Herefordshire residents and business owners - are you having problems with a cockroach infestation? Call in PGM & Son Pest Control Hereford for cockroach advice and control. Cockroaches can and do carry organisms which cause food poisoning. As they are often found in places like kitchens due to the humidity and food sources this is a real problem for food businesses and householders. Cockroaches rarely live outside in the British climate however, they do thrive indoors particularly in and around heating ducts, boilers and other heat producing appliances such as tumble driers. They breed rapidly and can often present a real problem in large spaces housing boiler rooms such as hospitals, hotels, restaurants and blocks of flats. There are two main species of cockroach in the United Kingdom, the German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach. The German cockroach is a light yellow / brown colour, around 10-15mm in length whilst the Oriental cockroach is black and larger, normally around 20-24mm in length. Professional pest control is essential to treat cockroaches. As German cockroach egg cases carry 30 or more nymphs and the Oriental cockroach egg capsules carry around 12-18 nymphs, an infestation can take hold quickly. It is therefore important to treat the unhatched eggs to prevent the nymphs from hatching later. Pest controllers will have access to insecticides not available to the general public and are trained in their use. It can be trick to get access to the areas needed to be treated to eradicate cockroaches but don’t worry as we’re fully trained and qualified to treat cockroaches at PGM Pest Control. Professional pest controllers like PGM Pest Control Herford will also make sure that the risks to non-target species, including humans and pets, are minimised. What can you expect from PGM & Son Pest Control Hereford if you have a cockroach infestation? We usually have a chat with you first to find out a bit about the problem and the environment in which infestation is. We’ll then arrange a suitable day and time to come out to treat the problem. We can offer rapid response times so don’t worry if you’ve found cockroaches because we can deal with it quickly for you. If we can’t see a problem – don’t panic! Cockroaches often remain hidden in the day so if we can’t see evidence of a problem, we’ll make sure we install monitoring equipment for you. We’re always one step ahead of the pests! Once we’ve treated the problem, we’ll give you some advice on how to prevent a future infestation. There are some really simple things you can do to prevent cockroaches taking up residence in your property, such as: Keeping areas clean and tidy: make sure you clean your surfaces and remove all food residues. Don’t leave dirty crockery and utensils out on sides and make sure you pay attention to areas which attract heat and food which you might not regularly clean such as the top of the fridge and below it. Keep your bins regularly emptied and make sure they have tight lids (a handy tip to prevent most pests!). Proof and maintain / repaid your property: fix leaky sinks and pipes to prevent water sources and seal holes to prevent entry, such as gaps around windows and doors. Did you know that, at PGM & Son Pest Control Hereford, we offer pest proofing services as well as pest control. As us about our pest proofing services – we’re always happy to give you a free no-obligation quote. • GOT A PROBLEM WITH RATS OR MICE?

If you’ve seen rats or mice in or around your property call in the pest controllers to deal with the problem. Don’t let a rodent problem go untreated because rodents multiply rapidly and the problem will be much harder to control, cost more money and cause more damage to your property. It’s important to address the problem early and to future proof your home or business to minimise the risk of another rodent infestation. You may not have seen rats or mice but noticed the following warning signs: Droppings Distinctive and strong urine smell Teeth or gnaw marks to surfaces such as skirting boards, items chewed Pieces of cardboard or soft materials that may be being used to build nests Holes and burrows Sounds – scratching and scampering Footprints and tracks Also, look out for possible entry points. Look for gaps in your brick work; loose fitting pipes and cables that lead externally and also points of entry from adjoining properties such as holes in loft spaces that lead to next door. Check out the common places that rodents like to nest including lofts, attics, behind kitchen cupboards and appliances and laundries. What can you expect from a PGM & SON Pest Control Rodent Treatment? First, we’ll have a discussion with you over the ‘phone to get a bit more of an idea what’s going on, how serious any infestation is and whether there may be any risk factors such as other animals in your property or the public using your business. We’ll give you an idea of cost but it’s always subject to site survey. The reason for this is that we need to see how big the infestation is, what access issues and risk factors there may be at your property. We can normally treat smaller rodent infestations in 3 visits. At the first visit we’ll assess the extent of the infestation and install bait stations. At the second visit, we’ll check on activity, re-setting any traps or topping up bait as required. We usually find that smaller infestations are eradicated at this point. However, at PGM & SON Pest Control Hereford, we include a third visit. At the third visit, we’ll check again on activity, remove all bait stations and traps and, importantly, give you any recommendations and advice we can to ensure that you don’t invite another rodent problem into your home or business. Please be aware that we do not eradicate rats or mice indiscriminately. If you think you’ve got rodents and we can’t see any evidence when we visit, we will lay monitoring bait. We never use rodenticides unless we have identified an infestation and exhausted other methods of minimising problems. Businesses should also be aware that if they generate foodstuff or food waste, for example pet food stores or cafes, pubs and restaurants, we are likely to recommend our commercial pest control service. Due to the public health risks that rodents impose, an ongoing pest management program is more appropriate. Check out our commercial pest control pages on our website for more information. We give free no-obligation quotes. Remember – don’t be embarrassed to report a rodent problem in your home or business. We see it all the time and often a problem is caused by neighbouring properties. We’ve seen it all – nothing shocks! If you think you have rats, or mice, don’t panic. Call PGM & SON Pest Control Hereford on 01981 241334 or 07964 370480 today for advice and solutions. We cover Herefordshire and Worcestershire so give us a call, visit our website at www.pgmpestcontrol.co.uk or drop us an email to: contact@pgmpestcontrol.co.uk. • Wasp Nest Removal in Herefordshire

Got Wasps? We've Got It Covered! Call PGM & SON Pest Control Hereford – experts in treating wasps’ nests across Herefordshire and Worcestershire This week we’re talking about wasp nests. The warm weather in Herefordshire and Worcestershire over Easter has prompted an early onset of wasps – this week we were called out to look at a wasp issue only to discover no less than five nests at one property! This came as a bit of a surprise to us as we weren’t expecting to see such established colonies all in one place. Queens emerge from hibernation around this time of year. However, the warm weather has activated them earlier than usual and, once they emerge from hibernation, they start to populate new colonies. And, with a nest producing around one hundred Queens a season you can see how an explosive wasp season might be in store for Herefordshire and Worcestershire residents in 2019. Of all the stinging insects, wasps are the most aggressive. Whilst wasps won’t go out of their way to sting you, they can and do sting with very little provocation. If you get too close to a wasp nest or agitate them, you may expect to be on the end of a sting. What to look out for if you’ve been stung by a wasp? Wasp sting symptoms may include swelling around the sting site for around 24 hours or more, itchiness, a sharp burning pain and a visible mark or welt where the wasp’s stinger punctured the skin. What to do if you’ve been stung by a wasp? Make sure you properly clean the area with soap and water to remove the venom. If needed, apply an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and take an over-the-counter antihistamine. You can also raise the affected area; elevating it can help to reduce swelling. It’s also best not to scratch the area affected as this can lead to infections and cause more issues. If your symptoms don’t improve over the next few days or you’re worried about a wasp sting or the wound becomes infected (for example pus, increased pain / swelling / redness) then contact your GP or call NHS 111 for advice. Wasp sting allergies Where someone’s body reacts adversely to a wasp sting, they can experience an allergic reaction. In some cases, an allergy can become quite serious; in rare cases fatal. If you or someone you’re with is stung by a wasp or wasps and experience any of the following symptoms you should seek medical immediate help: Swelling of the face, lips or throat (anaphylaxis), difficulty swallowing Dizziness Hives or itchiness in areas of the body not directly affected by the sting Feeling lightheaded and nauseous or vomiting Loss of consciousness Stomach cramps Sudden drop in blood pressure, weak or racing pulse or fast heart rate Wheezing, breathing difficulties Dial 999 for an ambulance if you or someone else displays signs of a severe reaction. If you do have a wasp problem, give PGM & Son Hereford a call – we offer a fast, reliable, local service across Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Worried about Wasps? Need Wasp Nest Removal? The Importance of Commercial Pest Control Treatment Pest infestation can occur in any location regardless if it is a commercial or industrial business. Pest infestation is one of the major problems encountered any industry, be it food, hospitality, schools, retail, corporate offices, warehousing and more. When there are pests close by, the daily business operations will be affected, causing loss of revenue, drop in the number of customers, and possibly penalties or fines. In order to avoid any unnecessary business losses, you need to invest in commercial pest control. One of the most important reasons why businesses prefer to use commercial pest management services is the need to maintain a completely clean and healthy business environment. For example in a restaurant, it would be very difficult and unsafe to do any kind of business activities where cockroaches or rats are running around. Similarly, it would be extremely dangerous and harmful if you operate a childcare facility and have pests that can harm children through bites or contamination through waste matter. If you happen to spot any rats, cockroaches, flies or any other pests within the premises of your business establishment it is advisable to remove the unwanted pests as soon as possible. • Dust Mite Problems?

Did you know that dust mites are the cause of most allergies in the UK? Where might you find a mite? House Dust Mite – very common, they live on mattresses, feeding on tiny particles of shed skin. Furniture Mite - found in damp upholstery. Flour Mite - infests damp cereals, flour or pasta and causes “Grocer’s Itch”, in people who handle the infested items. Itch Mite or Scabies Mite - causes Mange or Scabies in pets by burrowing into the skin, and causes an irritating rash. Bird Mites - frequently enter houses from old nests of sparrows, starlings or house martins, or from poultry. Harvest Mites - may bite people if brought in on the coats of dogs or on clothing. Red Spider Mite - the most conspicuous mite that enters houses. A plant feeder which comes indoors in spring to seek egg-laying sites and again in autumn to hibernate. What can you do to avoid a mite infestation? Time to de-clutter. Getting rid of unwanted items can also reduce the amount of dust in your home. Items rarely used collect dust. Dust mites like pillows, mattresses and blankets. Replacing them regularly is a good idea. De-cluttering is also a good excuse to get rid of the things you never use and adopt a more minimalist approach. It will free up your time to do other things if you aren’t having to keep tidying, dusting and cleaning a bunch of stuff you’ll never use. What to do with your clutter - One man’s junk is another man’s treasure! Here’s our top 5 ideas for getting rid of your clutter: Sell it on sites like ebay or gumtree to make a bit of cash. Or, pop down to your local car boot and sell your unwanted items there for extra cash. Give your unwanted but still in good condition items to friends, family or charity – let others benefit from them and help out the environment too! Recycle your items so others can benefit from them – use local recycling options to help your local community benefit such as the recycling bins at your local fire station which will mean they benefit from a cash donation too Make, do and mend – see if you can re-use items in your own home Call In a local house clearance firm if your clutter really has got out of hand! Wash items you can regularly. Bedding, curtains and toys can all harbour dust mites and can easily be popped in the washing machine. Hoover your carpets and clean them regularly with anti-mite shampoos – take care to read the label on any products you use which may also contain ingredients that may cause allergens. Clean dusty surfaces. Take care to use a damp cloth to remove the dust rather than a feather duster which will simply move the dust from one place to another. Air your bedding, clothing, rugs and curtains – preferably hang them outside in the fresh air and sunlight. Dust mites don’t like the direct sunlight, it kills them. As the spring descends on us, take the opportunity to throw open your doors and windows, let in the fresh air, start spring cleaning and hang out the textiles! Letting in fresh air can also help to reduce humidity and lower the temperature in your home, both of which dust mites need to thrive. You can also invest in a dehumidifier if your property suffers from damp and / or rarely gets any sunlight. Barely visible to the human eye mites have eight legs, a round body and are not noticeable until they have sufficient numbers to cause a major infestation. Typically, mites hatch from a tiny egg as a six-legged nymph. They grow as they moult and gain another pair of legs in the process! Some species can survive starvation for up to six months. DIY treatments for mites are rarely successful. Pest Controllers have access to treatments that are not available to the general public. Call us to day for advice and solutions. If you’re experiencing a problem with mites for any other pest control problems. • Why you should be checking your drains!

With rat infestations on the rise in domestic properties and some pest professionals reporting that over 60% of their work is rat related, defective drains have been coming under scrutiny in the pest control industry. If you’ve got a rat problem in your home, your pest controller should be looking for the source of the problem as well as treating it. If the source of the problem isn’t identified and resolved, then rest assured you rat problem is likely to recur. Responsible pest controllers will always look for entry points which includes lifting manhole covers and checking for drain defects. And, sometimes, it may be necessary for pest controllers to recommend a camera survey. If rats are accessing properties via the drains, some unscrupulous pest controllers may see this as a lucrative long-term contract and keep laying bait. This is not something we advocate for a number of reasons, including: Long term baiting isn’t a solution to a rodent problem; Frequent baiting carries risk to non-target species and increases rodenticide resistance; and, Ongoing baiting Is unnecessary and expensive – hardly a customer centric approach! For those who say that baiting in sewers and drains is not generally going to be accessible to non-target species we say check the latest UK Rodenticide Stewardship regime annual report which points out that questions are being asked about the level of rodenticide found in the aquatic environment. Other countries have already introduced control measures to address concerns. For example, in Germany, from 2020 rodenticides are only permitted if they are protected from coming into contact with water. Defects in drains can cause access for rats allowing them to enter cavity walls and roof space. Rats will also happily chew their way through plastic drain pipes. But there’s no need to panic because there are some simple steps homeowners and landlords can take to protect their properties, for example, carrying out regular checks of their properties including drainage systems, sewers and septic tanks. Carrying out regular maintenance work, for example, fixing blocked drains. And, if you have got a problem with your drains then don’t despair because there are things that can be done. A simple solution might be for your pest controller to fit a rat blocker within an external manhole allowing the rats to travel away from the property but not return. These often resolve the problem. As with anything pest related, you should always consult a fully qualified, professional pest controller. Pests carry diseases and it is important that you protect yourself, particularly if you are dealing with a drain problem. If you’re having a problem with rats, mice or any other pests call PGM & SON Hereford for advice and solutions. You can reach us on 01981 241334, talk to our pest control technician directly on 07964 370480 or email us at contact@pgmpestcontrol.co.uk. • Spring Edition of Pest Alert – Flies on the Rise!

What wonderful weather we’ve had the past few days. Long may it continue! Spring is certainly in the air and it’s lovely to see the daffodils in bloom, blue skies and sunshine. The spring lambs are on the way and children are outside playing again. With the improvement in weather comes annoying pests, most notably flies! And although we live in a beautiful, rural county, it does have its downsides.
