Ants are social insects that form colonies, often entering homes and commercial properties in search of food, water, and shelter. Unlike other pests, ants can establish hidden nests indoors or outdoors, allowing infestations to grow quickly and silently. Even small numbers can multiply rapidly, contaminating food, damaging structures, and disrupting daily operations.

Kitchens, pantries, and food storage areas
Bathrooms and damp spaces where water is available
Wall cavities, skirting boards, and under flooring
Gardens, patios, and external landscaping near buildings
Commercial properties such as offices, restaurants, or healthcare facilities
Properties with gaps or entry points in walls, doors, and windows
Ant infestations are often noticed when workers enter kitchens, food storage areas, or damp spaces.
Common signs include:
Small trails of ants along floors, walls, or skirting boards
Ants clustering around food sources, crumbs, or sugary spills
Visible nests in wall cavities, under flooring, or behind appliances
Increased ant activity in bathrooms, kitchens, and damp areas
Garden ants entering buildings through gaps in doors, windows, or foundations
Other signs include, repeated sightings of ants over several days or weeks, damage to wooden structures, insulation, or stored materials, and disruptions to commercial operations due to contamination risk.

Understanding the ant lifecycle is essential to ensure treatments target the source, not just the visible workers. Treating infestations without addressing the colony can result in recurring outbreaks and costly repeat callouts.
Eggs: Queens lay eggs inside the nest, which hatch into larvae.
Larvae: The larvae are fed by worker ants and develop into pupae within the nest.
Pupae: Pupae transform into adult ants, ready to leave the nest and forage.
Adult ants: Workers leave the nest to find food, water, and shelter, while queens remain to expand the colony.

Ants can return to the same property repeatedly if nests are not located and eliminated. Effective control focuses on identifying and removing the colony, sealing entry points, and targeting both indoor and outdoor nests, rather than simply chasing visible ants. Their life span is several years.

Professional ant control targets the source of infestations, eliminating colonies in kitchens, wall cavities, gardens, and other high-risk areas to prevent ants from returning. PGM treatments are safe, effective, and tailored to both residential and commercial properties.
Our RSPH-qualified, NPTA and BPCA-accredited team provides specialist ant control treatments which may include:
Locates and removes nests indoors or outdoors to stop the infestation at its source.
Blocks access through gaps, cracks, doors, and windows to prevent reinfestation.
Treats walls, skirting boards, food storage areas, and external entry points.
Most residential and small commercial treatments take 1–2 visits over a week, depending on the size and location of the infestation.

Our experts conduct a thorough survey of your property to locate nests, entry points, and foraging trails. We identify the species, assess infestation severity, and determine the best treatment strategy.

We tackle infestations using residual insecticide treatments on nests and trails, baiting to eliminate the colony at the source, nest removal where possible, and spot treatments in kitchens, wall cavities, and damp areas.

After treatment, we monitor the property to ensure the infestation is fully eradicated. We provide advice on ongoing ant prevention, including sealing gaps, managing food sources, and reducing environmental conditions that attract ants.

Every ant control situation is unique. The treatment required for your property depends on several factors including the size of your property and the extent of the problem you’re facing. Because no two ant jobs are the same, we don’t publish standard prices – instead, we provide you with a personalised quote based on your specific circumstances.

When you contact PGM, we’ll discuss your pest issue and gather the details we need to give you an accurate quote. Our quotes are fixed-price with no hidden charges or unexpected costs – what we quote is what you pay. In certain situations, we may recommend a property inspection before finalising your quote. This allows us to properly assess the situation, and ensure we recommend the right treatment approach. If an inspection is necessary, we’ll explain this to you and let you know whether there’s any charge involved.

Of all the pests out there, few come in as many varieties as the humble ant. But, if there’s one thing that they call have in common, it’s that ant colonies can be extremely difficult to get rid of.
And, when some ant infestations can even pose risks to the structure or those living inside of it, such as is the case with carpenter ants, Pharaoh ants, and fire ants, getting rid of the infestation and implementing an ant control strategy as quickly as possible is crucial.
Ants typically enter buildings in search of food, water, or shelter. Common attractants include sugary spills, crumbs, pet food, and moisture. In warmer months, colonies expand, increasing the likelihood of ants moving indoors.
Over-the-counter sprays and powders may kill visible ants but rarely eliminate the entire colony. Professional treatments target the nest itself, often using specialist baits that worker ants carry back to destroy the colony at its source.
Professional ant control typically takes 1 to 6 weeks for full colony elimination, though a reduction in activity is often seen within a few days. While the service appointment itself lasts roughly 90–120 minutes, the treatment requires time for baits to be carried back to the colony.
The common Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger) doesn't sting and rarely bites humans. If they do, it's harmless. However, you might run into "Red Ants" (Myrmica rubra) in the garden—they can give you a sharp, nippy sting that feels a bit like a nettle rash.
Absolutely. PGM uses approved, safe insecticides and baiting systems, applied by trained, accredited technicians. We ensure treatments are effective while minimizing risk to occupants, pets, and the environment.
