Spring Edition of Pest Alert – Flies on the Rise!

What wonderful weather we’ve had the past few days. Long may it continue!

Spring is certainly in the air and it’s lovely to see the daffodils in bloom, blue skies and sunshine. The spring lambs are on the way and children are outside playing again. With the improvement in weather comes annoying pests, most notably flies!

And although we live in a beautiful, rural county, it does have its downsides. With the famers out muck spreading, getting the fields ready for the next lot of crops, the flies start to increase in, often, intolerable numbers.

Already we’re seeing an increase in calls related to flies.

Of course, we can all put up with a fly or two but what’s the problem with having hoards of flies in your home or business?

Well, the main issue is the cross-contamination that can lead to some serious illnesses. Flies feed by vomiting onto the food surface and sucking up the resultant liquid. And when it does this, the fly contaminates the food with bacteria from its gut and feet. This is how flies transmit food poisoning, typhoid or cholera. And, the eggs of parasitic worms may also be carried by flies.

Hygiene is essential, particularly in businesses serving food. Fly infestations in any restaurant, commercial kitchen and food processing plant is a public health risk . Don’t let pests ruin your business, if you need more information or would like to get professional advice call our head technician today on 07964 370480. Stay ahead of cluster fly problems in and around your facility and provide a clean safe environment.

Top Ten easy ways to keep flies out of commercial kitchens

  1. Keeping on top of the refuse – make sure all recycling and rubbish is disposed of quickly. Keep rubbish bins clean and lids on

  2. Fit windows and doors with fly screens

  3. Keep food covered

  4. Sticky fly papers can be used, which may help

  5. Businesses which serve food on the premises can install ultra-violet electric fly killing machines

  6. Wipe down surfaces and keep dishcloths clean with disinfectant

  7. Don't let spills wait. Clean up as soon as possible.

  8. Dispose of produce that is no longer fresh - this is an invitation for fruit flies

  9. Inspect any and all produce that comes in for bruising

  10. Clean drains regularly and check for stagnant water, maintain good husbandry

Cluster flies cause a particular problem as the weather warms up. They’ve spent the Autumn and Winter hibernating and emerge in Spring seeking out egg laying sites outside. You may notice the characteristic smell of a mass of cluster flies. They are sluggish in flight and a nuisance in the house. There is one species of cluster fly which is far more prevalent in rural areas such as Herefordshire due to the fact they are parasitic on earthworms.

You may have had a cluster fly problem treated previously. Unfortunately, cluster flies are known to return to the same location year after year so if you had a problem previously you may well suffer the same in the future.

If you’re having a problem with house flies, cluster flies, blue bottles or any other pests call PGM & SON Hereford for advice and solutions.
