  • Think you’ve got bed bugs?

This week we’ve interviewed pest controller, Phil Martin, from PGM & SON Pest Control Herefordshire and Worcestershire about the issue of bed bugs. To find out more, read on… Morning Phil, thank you for taking time to answer some of our questions about bed bugs today. Hello, that’s no problem I’m happy to help. Are bed bugs a common problem? Surprisingly, yes. People don’t realise that you can pick up bed bugs from all sorts of every-day places such as trains, planes, coaches, buses and most public places where there is a high footfall. We handle bed bug problems frequently and we’ve seen a rise in cases over time. Why do you think there has been a rise in bed bug cases? The mass migration of people, people are travelling more and the onset of globalisation. People often report picking up bed bugs in hotels – does this mean the hotels aren’t keeping their rooms clean? No, it doesn’t mean that at all. A hotel may just be unlucky. However, it is important that the hotel acts on any report of potential bed bugs. When first reported, the hotel should act immediately to ensure they treat any problem and to carry out routine monitoring to ensure they remain bed bug free. Hotels should train their staff to know what to look out for and to isolate and contain any problems as soon as they are spotted. How can people be certain they have a bed bug problem? Indicators of a problem include bites, laundry and bedding having an unpleasant smell, dark spots on bed frames and mattresses that look like ink spots, blood smears on bedding and headboards and you may also see bed bugs on your bedding or furniture if you have an active infestation. What should people do if they think they do have a bed bug problem? The best thing to do is to seek professional advice. A pest controller will inspect the property, may put down monitoring devices and once a problem is identified they will advise on the best course of action. DIY treatments for bed bugs are rarely successful. Pest controllers have access to treatments that aren’t available to the general public. Also, it’s really tricky to treat bed bugs because all crevices and cracks including plug sockets and skirting boards need to be treated so it’s best to engage the services of a fully qualified pest controller. What’s your top tip for avoiding a bed bug problem in future? There isn’t a great deal you can do due to the presence of bed bugs in public places. Unfortunately, it’s often just down to bad luck. You can be vigilant and carry out visual checks of temporary accommodation you are staying in or the new property you’re moving into. You should also check for signs of pests when buying second hand-furniture. If you do find that you’ve staying somewhere which has a confirmed bed bug problem then you should take precautionary measures before returning home such as washing clothing, bedding and luggage on a 60 degree cycle, tumble drying on a hot setting for at least half an hour or you can freeze everything in the deep freeze for at least 3 days. Ultimately, if you find you have a problem don’t panic it’s a common issue and there’s usually no health risk. How can Herefordshire and Worcestershire residents and businesses contact PGM & SON Pest Control if they think they may have a bed bug problem? Well they can call us on 01981540088 or 07964 370480. Or, they can visit our website at www.pgmpestcontrol.co.uk where they can book a call back. Or they can email us at contact@pgmpestcontrol.co.uk and, if they prefer, they can find the live chat facility on the right hand side of their screen our website. • How to Spot the Tell-Tale Signs of Bed Bugs

How to spot the tell-tale sign of Bedbugs Got itchy red spots or lumps on your body? Can you see dark ink like spots or blood smears on your bedding, bed frame or mattress? Does your laundry and bedding smell unpleasant? You may have a problem with bed bugs if... If you’ve seen bed bugs on your furniture or bedding then you almost certainly have an active bed bug infestation. Bed bugs look for a human host to feed from and they most usually do this during the night. They lay their eggs in cracks and crevices near their human hosts so often bed frames, skirting boards, plug sockets and behind loose wallpaper are ideal housing for bed bugs. Bed Bugs Did you know? Bed bugs can go without feeding for months and often lie dormant waiting for a human host. This is why people often experience problems with bed bugs when first moving into a new home or rental property. And, bed bugs are quite often found in multiple occupancy buildings like flats, hotels, hostels, B&Bs where there is a quick and high turnover of occupants. Bed bugs aren't considered disease transmitters. Bites from bed bugs can cause irritation particularly in people with allergies. DIY Treatment for Bedbugs Whilst you can treat bed bugs yourself, often we find that DIY treatments don’t resolve the problem. That’s because DIY treatments aren’t as effective as those used by qualified pest controllers who have access to solutions that aren’t available to the general public. Because bed bugs lay their eggs in cracks and crevices it can be difficult to carry out a bed bug treatment effectively yourself. Fully qualified, professional pest controllers like PGM & Son Pest Control have received the training to ensure that your bed bug infestation is treated effectively and efficiently. For all your bed bug control needs, give PGM & Son Pest Control a call on 01981 540088 or 07964 370480 for a free no-obligation chat. • Having a problem with Bed Bugs or Fleas?

If you’re suffering from itchy lumps or experiencing bites on your skin, then you’re right to be concerned as you may have a bed bug or flea problem. Bites and itching are often the first sign of a problem and usually when someone gets in touch with pest control. As the weather starts to warm up and with more and more of us spending long periods of time indoors, fleas thrive in these conditions. Bed bugs look for human hosts to feed on and with the property market currently booming and sale and rental properties going on and off the market regularly this creates a problem as bedbugs lie dormant waiting for their next human host to take up residence. This week we’ll take a look at common signs for both bedbugs and fleas as people often mix up the two when the first sign is bites. Where are bedbugs and fleas commonly found? Bed Bugs tend to lay their eggs in cracks and crevices near human hosts so often will be found in bedrooms. Common areas we find evidence of bedbug activity are bed frames; skirting boards; behind loose wallpaper and plug sockets. These are all ideal places for bedbugs to hide out and lay their eggs. Fleas love a pet so often people first spot signs on fleas on their dogs or cats but fleas can also be found in pets’ bedding; furniture; carpets and rugs. Top Bed Bug Control Tip Back brush your pets or brush over a piece of paper to spot fleas or their droppings more easily Bites – bed bugs or fleas? Bed bugs mostly feed at night on their human host so you may find itchy red spots or lumps on your body. Flea bites, on the other hand, tend to be around the ankles and legs and typically are a small red spot around 5mm in diameter. Am I spotting a bed bug or flea? Take a closer look at your bedding, bed frame and mattress for signs of bed bugs such as dark ink line spots or blood smears. Also, you may find your laundry and bedding smells unpleasant. Check pets for fleas – are your pets scratching? Look closely at carpets and rugs – fleas jump! Treating your bed bugs or fleas A common complaint we hear from people is that they have tried to treat bedbugs and fleas themselves but they keep coming back. Whilst it is possible to treat bedbugs and fleas yourself DIY treatments don’t usually work in our experience. That’s because DIY treatments aren’t as effective as those used by qualified pest controllers who have access to solutions that aren’t available to the general public. Fleas and bedbugs can be extremely unpleasant and people sometimes leave it until the problem gets really bad before they report it because they feel embarrassed. This often leads to people trying to treat the problem themselves unsuccessfully. Never be embarressed to report a bedbug or flea problem Pest controllers have seen and heard it all so there’s no need to feel embarrassed about a bed bug or flea problem. It’s important to remember that a flea or bedbug problem isn’t something you have caused. Calling in pest control as soon as you think you may have a bed bug or flea problem will not only stop the problem getting worse but it can often put your mind at rest. PGM & Son Pest Control Services cover all local areas throughout the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. • Need to Get Rid of Fleas in Hereford?

This week we’re blogging about fleas in Hereford again and why?! Well, because, pest controllers are being inundated with calls from the public about fleas and at PGM & Son Pest Control Hereford we’re no different – calls about flea problems are up significantly from last year. The press recently reported that flea complaints across the UK have increased by 415% in 2019. Why Are We Seeing an Increase in Fleas? Record heat temperatures combined with the usual British rain has combined to make very humid conditions which are the perfect environment for fleas. Fleas thrive in these conditions and this accelerates their life cycle – they can grow from an egg to a fully-grown adult flea in just two weeks. July was the hottest month on record for the Earth since records started in 1880. The other contributory factor is the UK's love of cats and dogs! Around a quarter of UK households own at least one dog and almost 20% a cat so fleas have an abundance of hosts in the UK. Although fleas love the host animal, they are more likely to be found in bedding, furniture, carpets and rugs. And, a small flea problem can quickly become a problem – some flea species lay up to 40 eggs per day. Spot the Signs you May Have Fleas, which include: Your pets are scratching. You can see fleas or flea droppings in the coat of your cat or dog (try back brushing your pets or brush them over a piece of paper to more easily spot the signs of fleas). You or your family experience bites – usually around the ankles or legs. Typically, flea bites are a small red spot about 5mm in diameter. You can see fleas jumping in your carpets or on your furniture if you have an active infestation. So, as a reminder, be vigilant; checks your pets regularly including their bedding. Flea Top Tip for Herefordshire Tenents When you move into a new property check for signs of fleas . And, ask your landlord whether the previous tenants had pets and whether a flea fumigation was undertaken prior to your occupation. If you have a flea problem in Herefordshire  or Worcestershire  call PGM and Son Flea Control Services , for all your flea control needs and flea advice. • Rehoming bees in Herefordshire

This week PGM and Son pest control have been rehoming bees in Herefordshire. What should I do if I find a wild bee colony in my house, garden or property? Bees are a valuable pollinators and pest control companies will not destroy bee nests. If it is a honey bee hive then you should get in contact with the Herefordshire Beekeeper Association who will be able to remove the colony for you or advise you on what to do. Here's how our trained pest controllers helped rescue wild bees! There are over 200 types of Bees in the UK, including 25 types of bumblebees! Different types of bee may require different treatment methods. Note: Pest controllers do not apply bee treatments unless there's a serious threat to human life, 25% of all bee types are endangered. Advice about Relocating Bees If a nest is outside or underground then there shouldn't be a reason to move it. In more conventional and accessible places such as bushes, trees and sheds, then contacting a local beekeeper or pest controller to relocate the nest is an option. If you suspect you have honeybees and they are causing you problems then we would recommend you use a swarm collector from the British Bee Keepers Association or getting in touch with the Tree Bee Society. In most cases, they will come and collect the swarm free of charge. Relocating a colony or a swarm of Bees in Herefordshire When moving a beehive from one place to another a few things need to be taken into consideration, reducing stress on the bees and avoiding unpleasant surprises. If you follow some rules it can be quite simple. Not knowing the rules or not following them can have disastrous effects. Everything valid about relocating a beehive is also applicable when relocating a feral bee colony after the nest has been transferred into a hive. Relocating a captured bee swarm is much simpler A bee swarm has "forgotten" were it came from and the bees of a swarm reset their navigation system's home location once they have found a new home. Therefore, having captured a swarm, no rules apply for the new location - provided the swarm is relocated within a day from the time of capture. A swarm can be placed close to the home it emerged from; the bees accept the new hive location as their home and will not get disoriented or confused being near to their original location, even if it is only a meter away. What should you do if a swarm of bees takes up residence in your home or garden? It's the time of year when bees are at their most active and numerous reports have been coming in of swarms in gardens and even getting into properties. Most beekeepers may make a charge for removal of a swarm from your garden depending on travelling distances to cover costs of petrol etc. Swarms of honey bees can usually be safely removed by a suitably qualified beekeeper if they are contacted in time. If the honey bees have left their post swarming clustering place and taken up residence in the fabric of a building, that can be more difficult (if not impossible) to be safely dealt with by a beekeeper. Professional pest control personnel will be required to undertake the work either solely or in conjunction with a beekeeper If the honey bees are not causing a nuisance or a threat, they can be left alone. Some properties are known to have had honey bee colonies within their fabric for many years without causing any disturbance or problems to the property owner. Beekeepers are unable to help remove bumblebees, wasps, solitary bees or hornets so it is best to call in a pest control professional to help you solve the problem. Get in touch with PGM & SON today for bee nest removal help, support and guidance across Herefordshire and Worcestershire on 01981 540088.

  • The Breeding Cycle of Rats, Mice, Cockroaches & Flies

Pests – what’s in a number? Pests can breed rapidly, some more than others. It’s important to address a pest problem before it gets out of control. It doesn’t take long for pests to thrive in the right conditions and to cause a significant infestation and very large problem which can be much harder and take much longer to deal with. This week we look at the average breeding cycle of some common pests we encounter and how a small pest problem can very soon spiral out of control. At PGM & Son Pest Control, we have seen a significant rise in rodent problems over the last few months almost certainly worsened by the fact businesses have been forced to close their doors for months on end. Let’s take a look at the breeding cycle of rats, mice, cockroaches and flies. Having the foresight to pest proof your home or business can have significant benefits. It is a preventative measure, designed to save on costs and reputational damage that could come in the future if steps aren’t taken. Commercial property owners, facilities managers and particularly anyone responsible for hygiene compliance in a hospitality business need to know how to pest-proof their properties, in order to reduce the likelihood of unwanted visitors making a new home. If you're concerned that unwanted pests have already entered your home or business, talk to a pest control professional. They can help you to identify the type of pest and locate its most likely point of entry. The professionals at PGM Pest Control are specifically trained to identify steps that you can take to keep pests out of your home, as well as implement treatment options that are right for you. • Got Rats on your Allotment? We’ve got it covered!

Have you got unwanted visitors on your allotment? Are rodents ruining your fruit and vegetable plot? Have recent floods flushed out a vermin problem? Don’t despair, if you’ve a rat problem we can help! Rats are a particular problem on allotments due to the damage they can cause to fruits and vegetables and more importantly the potentially serious diseases they can spread. Unlike many other pests, rodent problems are not cyclical. We see rodent problems all year round and infestations are on the rise. Allotments can offer a fantastic environment for the rodent for many reasons, typically there are lots of harbourage for rodents on an allotment. For example, in compost heaps; in wood piles, under and inside buildings such as sheds and greenhouses and drains and pipes. As rodents feed on a variety of foods, allotments provide a great source of nourishment such as fruit and vegetables growing and stored and typically allotments house poultry which provides a food source through uneaten poultry feed. Signs you have a rat problem on your allotment Droppings – watch out for spindle shaped, blunt droppings around 1½-2cm long for the brown rat and pointed and around 1½ cm long for the black rat Urine in sheds and greenhouses - rat urine carries a very strong, distinctive smell Burrows and tunnels in your allotment or underneath structures Nests Footprints / tracks Rodent Health Risks Rodents can pose a serious health risk to humans. Rats carry diseases such as Leptospirosis or Weil's disease, Salmonella, Listeria, toxoplasma gondii and Hantavirus which can be passed onto humans. The HSS report around 40 cases of Weil’s disease every year. Two types of rat tapeworm spread to humans though eggs found in rat faeces. On allotments this is a particular concern as rodents urinate on or chew growing and stored fruits and vegetables. Also, compost used from a rat-infested bin can transfer disease to fruits and vegetables which is a particular risk for those who eat raw vegetables, for example, Vegans. 5 Tips to reducing your Rodent Risk There are some steps you can take to reduce the risks of inviting rodents onto your allotment, such as:- Removing accessible food sources: keep feed such as poultry feed in sealed containers; do not let excess food build up; keep wildlife feeding to a minimum. Remove harbourage: make sure you clear rubbish and clutter; use rodent proof containers for composting and general waste. Secure and proof structures: build structure such as sheds on concrete bases, maintain structures and seal holes and repair broken access points. Check your agreement to make sure you know who is responsible for rodent control on your allotment. IF you are responsible, make sure you take this responsibility seriously and that you do not cause a problem for neighbouring allotment holders. Don’t let a rodent problem get worse – rats breed rapidly, becoming sexually mature in around 3 months. Females may produce 3 to 12 litters of between 6 and 8 young in a year so what may start as a small problem can quickly escalate – call in the professionals today to sort out a rodent infestation. Rodents breed rapidly, if you have an infestation it’s best to call in a professional pest controller who will have access to the knowledge, training and solutions to deal with the problem quickly and with consideration to non-target species. • How to get rid of Mice

This week we’re looking at the subject of mice. Did you know each part of the mouse breeding cycle takes typically around 21 days? That’s around 3 weeks for gestation, around 3 weeks for weaning and a further 3 to 3 and a half weeks for developing to maturity. Mouse fact number 1: Mice typically survive for less than a year in the wild. How many babies do mice produce? On average between 5 and 7 pups but it can be up to 12. A female can become pregnant almost immediately after giving birth which is one reason why an infestation of mice can rapidly become out of control. That means females can produce between 5 and 10 litters a year. 120 mice from one female is a lot of mice! The six stages of a mouse's life gestation, birth, early development, weaning, sexual maturity, and adulthood Mouse fact number 2: Mice are colour blind. Their other senses make up for this though – they have an acute sense of hearing and they use their whiskers to sense temperature changes and surface textures. Mouse fact number 3: Mice are nocturnal and are great at climbing, jumping and swimming – contenders for the rodent Olympics! Mouse fact number 4: Mice can squeeze through any gap into which they can fit their head – around 5mm. And the reason they can do this is that they have flexible ribs! Unlike rats, mice make multiple trips at night to various food sources which can make it difficult to control them with toxic bait. This differs from rats who will gobble up one food source. How can I prevent Mice? Proof, proof, proof! Seal your entry points This can be quite difficult with mice – remember how we said they can squeeze through a hole 5mm in diameter? That’s equivalent to the end of a bic biro! Start with low level gaps first and then move to higher entry points. Take particular care around areas like pipes, windows, doors and cellars or basements as we often find these are common entry points for mice. If you gap under a door is larger than 4mm then install a door brush strip. Take a good look around the exterior of your property for potential nesting sites. This means cutting back any overgrown areas and clearing debris. Keep your garden clean and tidy. Do the same in your cellar, basement and loft! Check household waste is tidied away into sealed bins and that your rubbish is collected or removed regularly. Don’t forget about your compost heap either – make sure you have a suitable cover. Clear and wipe down surfaces in your house – don’t give mice a food source. Put unused food away into sealed containers. Encourage your teenagers to clean their rooms regularly and to empty their bins. A teenager’s room is often the place that used crockery and food crumbs are found so important to try to train your teenager! As the British Pest Control Association says, “Whilst good hygiene won’t eliminate a mouse problem, poor practices will attract them.” How to get rid of Mice If you do have a mouse problem, we recommend contacting a professional fully qualified pest controller. You can adopt some DIY mouse control methods but, in our experience, these rarely work effectively. If you do want to have a go at your DIY mouse control, then make sure you read the label on any amateur use poisons and traps you buy. When placing traps or poison make sure that you place them in a safe and secure place out of the reach of children and pets and any other non-target species. However, the best way to deal with a mouse problem is to find your local BPCA Pest Controller > We have access to a range of professional mice control treatments that are not available to the general public. PGM & Son Pest Control technicians are trained to know how much, where and when to use mouse control treatments. We have state-of-the-art monitoring equipment to enable us to determine possible entry points, size of infestation and to track mice to their nest. PGM & Son Pest Control is fully trained in handling mice infestations > At PGM & Son Pest Control, we operate an Integrated Pest Management approach meaning that we will work with you to advise you on how to reduce your risk of attracting mice in future. For all your pest control needs, give PGM & Son Pest Control Herefordshire and Worcestershire a call on 01981 540088 for a free no-obligation chat.
