  • Got a Problem with Flying Ants? Here's What You Need to Know

This week we’re talking about ants. You may have been seeing a lot of so called “Flying Ants” already despite it only being the start of Summer. Flying ants are actually reproductive males and females. These ants have a nuptial swarming flight during the months of July and August. Their mating takes place in the air but only last a few days. After mating the female finds a nest where she stays during Winter, laying eggs during the following Spring so that a new colony is started. Lots of people dislike “flying ants” and worry when they find a swarm in or around their property but it’s important to remember that this is a natural reproductive cycle and it will only last a few days. If you can wait it out, you’ll let the natural cycle continue and be ant-free within days! However, we do understand that there are occasions when flying ants cause a real problem, for example, in businesses that serve food to the public. Whilst ants aren’t thought to carry disease, because they forage inside and out they can carry unwanted matter with them. It’s important to find the nest so the problem can be dealt with. Often you may see mounds of earth or you may witness these fascinating creatures marching back and forth to from the nest to food source. There’s different species of ants too. The most common one that people are aware of is the black garden ant. The black ant isn’t actually black but very dark brown. All species of ants have the same body – head; thorax and abdomen. They are about 3-5mm in length and have narrow waists and a sharp joint in their antennae. Other species of ant include the Pharaoh ant which prefers protein to the sweet food that the common black garden ant prefers. They can often be found in centrally heated blocks of flats and they build numerous and often inaccessible nests in the structure of the building itself. There’s also the less common ghost ant which are a paler colour but similar to the pharaoh ant. Its best to call in pest professionals to control these ants as finding and treating the nests can be difficult. If you’re unsure what type of crawling insect you have – not a problem! Give us a call and we’ll come and take a sample and let you have the results with our fast and accurate insect identification service. If you have flying ants or any other ants in your home or business give PGM Pest Control a call, we serve all local areas across Herefordshire and Worcestershire under our pest control shield for our Ant Control Services . • Wasp World Records – Part 2

The Largest Species of Wasp: Asian Giant Hornet Following on from the largest wasp nest ever recorded, the Guinness Book of World Records also lists the largest species of wasp: the Asian Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia), native to Japan. This formidable insect can grow up to 2.2 inches (about 5.5 cm) long with a wingspan of around 3 inches (7.5 cm), making it truly enormous compared to typical wasps. Its venom is so powerful it can dissolve human tissue – ouch!! Its venom is extremely potent and can dissolve human tissue, posing a serious threat to people and animals alike. Due to its size and venom, the Asian Giant Hornet is often feared and requires professional removal if found near homes or gardens. If you have spotted hornets in your garden and need to get rid of hornets or remove a hornet’s nest , call in the professional pest control specialists now. Recent Record-Breaking Wasp Nests In New Zealand, German wasp (Vespula germanica) nests have been found growing to astonishing sizes. For example, a nest discovered in Martinborough measured approximately 1.8 meters long, 1.3 meters wide, and nearly 1 meter tall, housing an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 worker wasps. Such nests are described as "frighteningly large" and "almost certainly perennial," meaning they survive multiple years, likely aided by climate change with milder winters and warmer summers. The Guinness World Record for the largest wasp nest was recorded in New Zealand in 1963, measuring 3.7 meters (12 ft 2 in) long and 1.75 meters (5.25 ft) in diameter. Another large nest found in Auckland in 2020 measured 3.75 meters tall and 1.7 meters wide. Recently, a "monster" nest in South Auckland containing over 200,000 wasps was destroyed, highlighting the scale and challenge of managing these invasive pests. Impact and Control of Large Wasp Nests Large wasp nests like these have significant ecological and economic impacts, preying heavily on native insects and honeybee populations, and posing risks to human health. The nests are aggressively defended by wasps, making removal dangerous without proper protective equipment and expertise. Recommended control methods include professional pest control services using toxic baits such as Vespex, which wasps carry back to the nest, effectively destroying the colony safely. Need Help With Wasp or Hornet Control in Herefordshire or Worcestershire? If you spot hornets or wasps in your garden or discover a nest, do not attempt to remove it yourself. • Wasp World Records – Part 1

Want to know what the world’s largest recorded wasp nest was? It was located on a farm in New Zealand in 1963. Made from a papier mache like material from wood shavings and saliva, the nest was so large and heavy that it had fallen from a tree onto the ground where it split into two. It measured a mighty 12 foot and 2 inches in length and 5.25 feet in diameter and a whopping 18 foot in circumference! It was likely constructed by the Vespula germanica , more commonly known as the German wasp. WOW! What a mighty wasp nest that was! If you have a wasp nest in Herefordshire or Worcestershire that might match up, let us know! We encourage our local residents and business owners to reach out to us if you have a wasp nest of any shape or size! We are particularly interested in gathering information about the size, location, and appearance of the wasp nest, as these details can significantly aid in our research and understanding of wasp behaviour in our local regions. Please provide us with any observations you have made regarding the activity level of the wasps, the time of year you noticed the nest, and any other relevant information that could help us identify the species. Your contributions could be invaluable in helping us monitor and manage wasp populations effectively. Don’t hesitate to contact us with your findings, as your input could play a crucial role in our efforts to study these fascinating insects. Go to our insect identification page and upload your photos for our wasp nest study. Fascinating Wasp Facts Wasps build their nests from chewed wood mixed with saliva, creating a lightweight, waterproof, and durable structure. Only female wasps have stingers, which they use for laying eggs and defense. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times. When threatened, wasps release a pheromone that signals others in the colony to defend the nest aggressively. Wasp Activity and Nest Removal Wasps are most active in the UK from April to September, with peak activity in the summer months. Wasp nests typically last 3 to 4 months and will die off naturally if left alone, but removal is recommended for safety and comfort. Professional wasp nest removal usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and involves spraying insecticide into the nest entrance. It is important to stay clear of the area during and after treatment for safety reasons. Never attempt to remove a wasp nest yourself; always call a professional pest control service. Need Wasp Control in Herefordshire or Worcestershire? If you have a wasp nest or require wasp control services across all local areas of Herefordshire or Worcestershire, PGM & Son Wasp Control offers 24-hour call-outs and expert removal services. • Got Fleas in Herefordshire or Worcestershire? We’ve got it Covered!

No Fleas Please! Fleas can be a real problem. And, many people are embarrassed to report a flea problem, but our advice is – don’t be embarrassed if you have a flea problem. It’s very common and at PGM & SON Pest Control Herefordshire and Worcestershire we’ve seen it all before so there’s no need to worry. If you’ve got a cat or you’ve come into contact with a cat you can quite easily end up with a flea problem. In this week’s blog, we’ll look at what we know about fleas and what we can do to help if you find you have a flea problem. What do we know about fleas? Fleas are parasitic; living on warm blooded animals. After feeding on an infested animal, the female flea lays her eggs. Female fleas can live up to two years and lay up to 1000 eggs. After several days the eggs turn into larvae which then spin silk cocoons. When the developed adult detects vibrations on the host animal it will emerge from the cocoon. The complete life cycle takes around one month. Fleas are most active in communal rooms where pets sleep and where there is most activity. Fleas can be found living on domestic animals, in carpets, pet bedding and upholstery. The adult fleas feed on blood of humans and animals. Larvae live in the nest of the host and feed on skin, feathers and the blood-rich faeces of the adult flea. Although fleas don’t usually transmit diseases, they do bite and their bites can cause irritation which may be worse for people with allergies. How to Tell if You Have a Flea Infestation Your pets are scratching. You can see fleas or flea droppings in the coat of your cat or dog (dry back brushing your pets or brush them over a piece of paper to more easily spot the signs of fleas. You or your family experience bites – usually around the ankles or legs. Typically, flea bites are a small red spot about 5mm in diameter. You can see fleas jumping in your carpets or on your furniture if you have an active infestation. How Can I Prevent Fleas? Well, it’s pretty hard to prevent your pet from getting fleas but nevertheless you can take some steps to reduce the chances of you getting a flea infestation in the future: Apply veterinarian approved flea treatments to your pets on a regular basis. Hoover carpets, rugs and furniture that your pet frequents. Regularly wash pets’ beds in the hottest cycle on your machine, including blankets and toys. Keep your garden neat and tidy; regularly mow, rake up leaves and dispose of grass and bush cuttings. DIY treatments for fleas are rarely successful. • Think you’ve got bed bugs?

This week we’ve interviewed pest controller, Phil Martin, from PGM & SON Pest Control Herefordshire and Worcestershire about the issue of bed bugs. To find out more, read on… Morning Phil, thank you for taking time to answer some of our questions about bed bugs today. Hello, that’s no problem I’m happy to help. Are bed bugs a common problem? Surprisingly, yes. People don’t realise that you can pick up bed bugs from all sorts of every-day places such as trains, planes, coaches, buses and most public places where there is a high footfall. We handle bed bug problems frequently and we’ve seen a rise in cases over time. Why do you think there has been a rise in bed bug cases? The mass migration of people, people are travelling more and the onset of globalisation. People often report picking up bed bugs in hotels – does this mean the hotels aren’t keeping their rooms clean? No, it doesn’t mean that at all. A hotel may just be unlucky. However, it is important that the hotel acts on any report of potential bed bugs. When first reported, the hotel should act immediately to ensure they treat any problem and to carry out routine monitoring to ensure they remain bed bug free. Hotels should train their staff to know what to look out for and to isolate and contain any problems as soon as they are spotted. How can people be certain they have a bed bug problem? Indicators of a problem include bites, laundry and bedding having an unpleasant smell, dark spots on bed frames and mattresses that look like ink spots, blood smears on bedding and headboards and you may also see bed bugs on your bedding or furniture if you have an active infestation. What should people do if they think they do have a bed bug problem? The best thing to do is to seek professional advice. A pest controller will inspect the property, may put down monitoring devices and once a problem is identified they will advise on the best course of action. DIY treatments for bed bugs are rarely successful. Pest controllers have access to treatments that aren’t available to the general public. Also, it’s really tricky to treat bed bugs because all crevices and cracks including plug sockets and skirting boards need to be treated so it’s best to engage the services of a fully qualified pest controller. What’s your top tip for avoiding a bed bug problem in future? There isn’t a great deal you can do due to the presence of bed bugs in public places. Unfortunately, it’s often just down to bad luck. You can be vigilant and carry out visual checks of temporary accommodation you are staying in or the new property you’re moving into. You should also check for signs of pests when buying second hand-furniture. If you do find that you’ve staying somewhere which has a confirmed bed bug problem then you should take precautionary measures before returning home such as washing clothing, bedding and luggage on a 60 degree cycle, tumble drying on a hot setting for at least half an hour or you can freeze everything in the deep freeze for at least 3 days. Ultimately, if you find you have a problem don’t panic it’s a common issue and there’s usually no health risk. How can Herefordshire and Worcestershire residents and businesses contact PGM & SON Pest Control if they think they may have a bed bug problem? Well they can call us on 01981540088 or 07964 370480. Or, they can visit our website at www.pgmpestcontrol.co.uk where they can book a call back. Or they can email us at contact@pgmpestcontrol.co.uk and, if they prefer, they can find the live chat facility on the right hand side of their screen our website. That’s great Phil, thank you for your time today. No problem!

  • How to Spot the Tell-Tale Signs of Bed Bugs

How to spot the tell-tale sign of Bedbugs Got itchy red spots or lumps on your body? Can you see dark ink like spots or blood smears on your bedding, bed frame or mattress? Does your laundry and bedding smell unpleasant? YOU MAY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BED BUGS IF... If you’ve seen bed bugs on your furniture or bedding then you almost certainly have an active bed bug infestation. Bed bugs look for a human host to feed from and they most usually do this during the night. They lay their eggs in cracks and crevices near their human hosts so often bed frames, skirting boards, plug sockets and behind loose wallpaper are ideal housing for bed bugs. BED BUGS Did you know? Bed bugs can go without feeding for months and often lie dormant waiting for a human host. This is why people often experience problems with bed bugs when first moving into a new home or rental property. And, bed bugs are quite often found in multiple occupancy buildings like flats, hotels, hostels, B&Bs where there is a quick and high turnover of occupants. Bed bugs aren't considered disease transmitters. Bites from bed bugs can cause irritation particularly in people with allergies. DIY Treatment for Bedbugs Whilst you can treat bed bugs yourself, often we find that DIY treatments don’t resolve the problem. That’s because DIY treatments aren’t as effective as those used by qualified pest controllers who have access to solutions that aren’t available to the general public. And, because bed bugs lay their eggs in cracks and crevices it can be difficult to carry out a bed bug treatment effectively yourself.
