  • Ants in your Pant-ry?

April has seen PGM & Son Pest Control out and about dealing with lots of ant problems. Climate change is a key factor in the rise in ants. And, with lots of rain recently and the hot sunny period already upon us and set to continue along with rain spells in between, we’re expecting the number of call-outs to continue to rise. And although they don’t carry transmittable diseases like other pests, they can still be a nuisance and they can, and do, bite. As with lots of other pests, prevention is often better than cure and simple steps like keeping food items in sealed containers, wiping down sides properly and not leaving pest food out can help enormously. If you do find you have a problem, it’s best to contact a pest controller as soon as possible because the problem can be treated much quicker and easier if you don’t waste time. So if you are having a problem with an ant infestation, if you need help to get rid of your ants then call PGM & Son Pest Control, Herefordshire and Worcestershire for help and advice. At PGM Pest Control, we understand the importance of ant awareness, especially during this time of the year when ant activity tends to peak. As spring temperatures start to rise, problematic ants will inevitably start to make a nuisance for food businesses and residential homes. Ants may seem innocuous at first glance, but their behaviour and presence can pose significant challenges for homeowners and businesses. From raiding food cupboards to establishing colonies within structures, ants are adept at exploiting vulnerabilities and establishing their presence where they're least welcome. That's why, as a leading pest control company recognised by the British Pest Control Association (BPCA), we're committed to equipping our customers with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively manage ant infestations. In this article, we'll delve into essential facts and tips about ants, tailored specifically to the unique context of April in the UK. From understanding ant behaviour to implementing proactive prevention strategies, let's safeguard our homes and businesses together. Understanding Ant Behaviour To effectively manage ant infestations, it's essential to gain insight into their behaviour patterns, especially as they manifest in the UK. Here are some key aspects of ant behaviour to consider: Foraging Patterns: Ants are highly organised social insects that operate in well-defined foraging trails. In the UK, particularly during April, ants become more active as they seek out food sources to sustain their colonies. These foraging trails can often be observed indoors, particularly in kitchens and other areas where food crumbs are present. Colony Structure: Ant colonies typically consist of a queen, worker ants, and male ants. The queen is responsible for laying eggs, while worker ants are tasked with foraging for food, caring for the young, and maintaining the nest. Male ants, on the other hand, play a role in mating with the queen to ensure the colony's survival. Common Species: In the UK, the most common ant species encountered in homes and businesses include the black garden ant (Lasius niger) and the pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis). While black garden ants are typically outdoor nesters, they often enter buildings in search of food. Pharaoh ants, on the other hand, are notorious for establishing nests within structures, making them particularly challenging to eradicate. Factors Attracting Ants: Ants are attracted to environments that offer readily available food, water, and shelter. Factors such as improper food storage, unsealed garbage bins, and moisture-rich environments can contribute to ant infestations. Understanding these attractants is crucial for implementing effective prevention strategies. By familiarising yourself with the behaviour of ants, we can better anticipate their movements and implement targeted pest management strategies. In the following sections, we'll explore signs of ant infestations, potential risks, prevention tips, and effective treatment solutions.   Signs of an Ant Infestation Identifying the early signs of an ant infestation is crucial for prompt intervention and effective pest management. Here are some common indicators to watch out for: Ant Trails: One of the most visible signs of an ant infestation is the presence of foraging trails, especially in areas where food is accessible. These trails may be observed indoors, along skirting boards, countertops, or near food storage areas. Outdoor trails can often be spotted along pathways, garden edges, or cracks in pavements. Nests and Mounds: Depending on the ant species, nests may be located indoors or outdoors. Indoor nests are typically found in concealed areas such as wall voids, under floorboards, in kitchen cupboards or behind appliances. Outdoor nests may appear as small mounds of soil or debris, particularly in gardens, lawns, or near building foundations. Visible Ants: Spotting individual ants, particularly in large numbers, is a clear indication of an ant infestation. In the UK, common ant species like the black garden ant and pharaoh ant may be observed indoors or outdoors, especially during April when their activity increases. Frass or Debris: Ants may leave behind frass, which consists of fecal matter and discarded debris, near their nests or foraging areas. This can appear as small piles of granular material or tiny wood shavings, depending on the ant species and nesting habits. Unexplained Damage: Ant infestations can lead to damage to property, particularly if they're nesting within structures. Look out for signs of wood damage, particularly in areas where moisture is present, as certain ant species may excavate galleries in wood to establish their nests. Unusual Odours: In some cases, ant infestations may be accompanied by unpleasant odours, particularly if the ants are nesting indoors. Pharaoh ants, for example, emit a musty odour that may be noticeable in infested areas. By being vigilant and attentive to these signs, homeowners and businesses can take proactive measures to address ant infestations before they escalate. In the next section, we'll explore the potential risks and concerns associated with ant infestations, shedding light on why early detection is crucial for effective pest management.   Understanding the Hidden Dangers of Ant Infestations Ant infestations pose various risks and concerns for homeowners and businesses in the UK. Understanding these risks is essential for implementing timely and effective pest management strategies. Here are some key considerations: Food Contamination: Ants are opportunistic feeders and can contaminate food supplies by crawling over them or depositing fecal matter and saliva. This can lead to foodborne illnesses and compromise food safety standards, especially in residential kitchens, restaurants, and food processing facilities. If you own a commercial kitchen call us to discuss your pest control contract. Property Damage: Certain ant species, such as carpenter ants, are known to excavate wood to build their nests. Over time, this can result in structural damage to buildings, furniture, and wooden fixtures. In the UK, damp conditions prevalent during April can exacerbate the risk of wood decay and structural compromise. Health Concerns: While most ant species are not directly harmful to humans, some can deliver painful stings or bites if provoked or threatened. For individuals with allergies or sensitivities, ant stings can trigger severe reactions, including anaphylaxis. Pharaoh ants, in particular, are known to transmit pathogens and bacteria, posing a risk to public health. Property Value: Severe or recurring ant infestations can negatively impact property values and deter potential buyers or tenants. Infested homes or businesses may be perceived as unsanitary or poorly maintained, affecting their marketability and resale value. Interference with Daily Activities: Dealing with an ant infestation can disrupt daily activities and undermine the comfort and functionality of living or working spaces. Ants crawling on surfaces, invading food storage areas, or causing unpleasant odors can create a sense of discomfort and inconvenience for occupants. Risk of Secondary Pest Infestations: In some cases, ant infestations can attract other pests, such as cockroaches or rodents, which may exploit the same food sources or nesting sites. This can lead to compound pest problems and increase the complexity of pest management efforts. By recognising these risks and concerns associated with ant infestations, homeowners and businesses can prioritise proactive pest prevention and seek professional assistance when needed. In the following section, we'll explore practical tips for preventing ant infestations and safeguarding your property.   Ant Prevention Tips Preventing ant infestations requires a proactive approach that addresses potential entry points, food sources, and conducive conditions. Here are some practical prevention tips: Maintain Cleanliness: Keep indoor and outdoor areas clean and free of food debris, crumbs, and spills. Regularly sweep floors, wipe down countertops, and clean up food preparation areas to eliminate potential food sources for ants. Seal Entry Points: Seal cracks, gaps, and openings around windows, doors, and utility penetrations to prevent ants from entering buildings. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal gaps and consider installing door sweeps to block entry points. Store Food Properly: Store food items in airtight containers, especially dry goods like cereal, flour, and pet food. Avoid leaving food out on countertops or in open packaging, as this can attract foraging ants looking for easy meals, as well as flies and wasps ! Dispose of Refuse Properly: Use sealed rubbish bins with tight-fitting lids to prevent ants from accessing food waste. Empty waste bins regularly and clean them to remove food residues and odors that may attract ants. Eliminate Standing Water: Address moisture issues in and around the home, as damp environments can attract ants seeking water sources. Fix leaky outlets, repair plumbing leaks, and ensure proper drainage to eliminate standing water. Trim Vegetation: Keep vegetation, shrubs, and trees trimmed away from the exterior of buildings to prevent ant trails from forming and provide less shelter for foraging ants. Remove overhanging branches that may provide access to upper floors. Inspect Outdoor Structures: Regularly inspect outdoor structures such as decks, patios, and fences for signs of ant activity or nesting. Remove debris, leaf litter, and organic matter that may provide nesting sites for ants, especially around buildings. Monitor Indoor Plants: Check indoor plants for signs of ant activity, as ants may establish nests in potted plants or use them as bridges to access indoor spaces. Place plant pots on saucers with water to create a barrier against crawling ants. Seek Professional Assistance: If ant infestations persist despite preventive measures, consider seeking professional pest control services from reputable companies like PGM & Son Pest Control. Our experienced pest technicians can assess the situation, implement targeted treatments, and provide ongoing monitoring to ensure effective ant control . By incorporating these prevention tips into your routine, you can significantly reduce the risk of ant infestations and maintain a pest-free environment in your home or business. In the next section, we'll explore effective treatment solutions for addressing ant infestations, with a focus on the unique needs of properties.   Effective Treatment Solutions for Ant Infestations When faced with persistent ant infestations, it's essential to implement effective treatment solutions tailored to the unique needs of properties. Call your Local Pest Controller when dealing with stubborn ant infestations, it's important to consult a professional for tailored and effective solutions. Your local pest controller can offer specialised services to eliminate ants and prevent future infestations, ensuring your property is protected and pest-free. Here are some of the treatment methods they might employ: Identification of Ant Species: The first step is to accurately identify the ant species causing the infestation. Different ant species may require different treatment approaches, so understanding the species involved is crucial for targeted pest management. Indoor Treatments: For indoor ant infestations, a pest controller may utilise a combination of baiting and residual insecticides to eliminate ants at their source. Baits are strategically placed in areas of ant activity to attract foraging ants, which then carry the bait back to the nest, effectively eliminating the colony. Outdoor Treatments: Outdoor ant infestations may require perimeter treatments to create a barrier against invading ants. Pest controllers use specialised insecticides applied around the exterior of buildings to prevent ants from entering and nesting indoors. Crack and Crevice Treatments: Pest controllers meticulously inspect and treat cracks, crevices, and entry points where ants may gain access to buildings. By targeting these vulnerable areas, we can disrupt ant trails and prevent further intrusion. Nest Elimination: In cases where ant nests are located indoors or outdoors, pest controllers employ techniques to directly eliminate the nests. This may involve dust or aerosol treatments applied directly to the nest site to eradicate ants and prevent reinfestation. Follow-Up Monitoring: After initial treatments, pest controllers conduct follow-up inspections and monitoring to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and address any residual ant activity. Ongoing monitoring allows us to ensure long-term ant control and provide additional treatments if necessary. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Approach: Most reputable pest controllers approach to ant control is grounded in Integrated Pest Management principles, which prioritise environmentally responsible solutions and minimise pesticide use. We focus on addressing underlying conditions conducive to ant infestations, such as food sources and moisture, to prevent future problems. By utilising these effective treatment solutions and adopting a proactive approach to ant control, you can effectively eradicate ant infestations and provide long-term protection for homes and businesses in the UK. • The Importance of Proactive Pest Control: Benefits and Strategies

The Importance of Proactive Pest Control Pest control is often viewed as a reactive measure, something you consider only after discovering an infestation. However, proactive pest control is far more effective and beneficial in the long run. It not only saves you money but also protects your health, property, and reputation. In this article, we'll explore the importance of proactive pest control, discuss specific strategies for common pests, and delve into integrated pest management techniques. Before considering pest control have you got the basics right? Are pests likely to find food sources, water and nice places for harbourage (places to live) in or around the vicinity of your business or home? Everyone needs to take a close look at their surroundings and their own behaviour when the pests arrive. If you can stop pests finding food, water and harbourage they won’t want to stay. Why is proactive pest control so important? Regularly using poisons is unethical because of the potential harm to non-target species. Accidental poisoning of other wild animals such as otters, owls and other birds of prey is common and don’t forget about domestic animals too – no-one wants to see their family dogs and cats fall foul to poisons laid down to treat vermin . Additionally, there is the potential for the rodent population to build up a tolerance when using poisons. Pest controllers regularly see this, particularly when people use household poisons purchased from local shops and online retailers. These DIY products, often marketed as quick and easy solutions for pest problems, can lead to a range of complications that many homeowners and businesses may not anticipate. Specific Pest Identification and Prevention Strategies Different pests require different approaches. Here are some common pests and tailored strategies for preventing their infestations: Rodents Rodents are notorious for causing damage and spreading diseases. To prevent rodent infestations: Seal Entry Points: Use steel wool or caulk to block any holes or gaps around pipes, vents, and doors. Proper Food Storage : Keep food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills promptly. Eliminate Clutter : Keep your home or business tidy, as clutter provides hiding places for rodents. Insects Insects can be just as problematic, ranging from ants and cockroaches to termites and bed bugs. Here’s how to prevent their infestations: Manage Moisture : Fix any water leaks and ensure good ventilation to reduce humidity. Remove Standing Water : Regularly check for and eliminate standing water around your property. Use Screens : Install screens on windows and vents to prevent insects from entering. Proper Waste Disposa l: Keep trash cans tightly sealed and regularly clean them. Wood-boring Insects Wood-boring insects like woodworm, termites and carpenter ants can cause significant structural damage. To prevent their infestations: Identify and Treat Affected Wood : Regularly inspect wooden structures for signs of infestation and treat them promptly. Preventative Treatments : Apply preventative treatments to new wood constructions to deter infestations. Benefits of Proactive Pest Control Proactive pest control offers numerous benefits beyond just preventing infestations: Cost Savings Dealing with an infestation can be expensive. Proactive measures are generally cheaper and more effective in the long run. Health and Safety Pests can transmit diseases and cause allergic reactions. Proactive pest control helps protect your health by reducing the risk of pest-related health issues. Reputation Management For businesses, preventing pest problems is crucial for maintaining a good reputation. A pest infestation can lead to negative reviews and lost customers. Businesses may face lawsuits if customers or employees suffer health issues due to pest infestations. Regulations and Compliance For businesses, it's important to comply with relevant pest control regulations. This includes maintaining records of pest control activities and ensuring that all methods used are compliant with local laws. Pest infestations are not just a nuisance; they can also lead to serious legal consequences for businesses . In the UK, various laws and regulations mandate that businesses must maintain pest-free environments, particularly in industries like food service, healthcare, and hospitality. Key Takeaway : Good housekeeping may prevent up to 65% of potential pest activity. Got Pests? We've Got it Covered! The campaign is led by the environmental charity, WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), and typically takes place in March. During Food Waste Action Week, individuals, businesses, and organisations are encouraged to take action to reduce food waste, such as by planning meals, using up leftovers, composting food scraps, and supporting local food banks. The campaign also highlights the economic and environmental benefits of reducing food waste, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving money, and conserving natural resources. The campaign includes a range of activities and events, including social media campaigns, educational resources, and community events, to engage individuals and businesses in food waste reduction efforts. Key Takeaways Understanding the signs of rodent infestations is crucial for prompt action. The UK is facing a significant rise in rodent infestations, known as the 'ratflation' crisis. Private pest control services are experiencing a surge in demand due to limited support from local councils. In regions like Worcestershire and Herefordshire, access to council assistance for pest control is severely limited or non-existent. Collaboration between authorities, communities, and private pest control services is essential to effectively combat the crisis. Understanding the signs of rodent infestations is crucial for prompt action In recent years, the UK has found itself grappling with a growing crisis – one that is not only concerning but also creeping into the very fabric of our homes and communities. We're talking about the alarming surge in rodent infestations, aptly dubbed as the 'Ratflation' crisis by the British Pest Control Association (BPCA). Phil Martin, an award-winning pest controller at PGM & Son Pest Control, sheds light on this pressing issue, offering invaluable insights on how to identify the tell-tale signs of infestations and what actions can be taken to address them. His expertise, shared during an interview with Jonathan Ray on BBC , underscores the severity of the situation. The UK is facing a significant rise in rodent infestations, known as the 'ratflation' crisis According to BPCA, the statistics are grim. Last year alone, there were over a quarter of a million home visits made by pest control professionals to tackle rat and mice infestations across the UK. To put it into perspective, that's nearly 750 visits per day . Such staggering numbers indicate a crisis that demands urgent attention and effective solutions. Private Pest Control Services are Experiencing a Surge in Demand Due to Limited Support from Local Councils Adding to the gravity of the situation is the dwindling support from local councils. In the face of this escalating crisis, it's imperative for homeowners and business proprietors to be vigilant and proactive. • Cluster Fly Season: Why Cluster Flies Are Invading Your Home

Now we’re into Autumn we’re starting to see cluster flies as they gather in the roof spaces and upper rooms of properties to hibernate, often in significantly large numbers. I had pest control in last year to treat cluster flies and they’re back again? Unfortunately, this is a common problem because cluster flies tend to return to the same location year after year so if you had a cluster fly issue in previous years and you’ve got them again it doesn’t mean your pest controller failed. Unfortunately, what it does mean is that you can expect your visitors once a year. However, once you’re aware of this it can help manage expectations and also enable you to get prepared to treat the problem as soon as it arrives. Cluster flies have a characteristic smell and are sluggish in flight. Cluster flies are a nuisance in the house in particular due to the large numbers in which they congregate. There is one species of cluster fly which is far more prevalent in rural areas such as Herefordshire due to the fact they are parasitic on earthworms. So, it’s not a surprise that so many Herefordshire residents and business owners experience cluster fly problems. If you’re having a problem with house flies, cluster flies, blue bottles or any other pests call PGM & SON Pest Control Hereford for advice and solutions. We will normally treat a cluster fly problem with an insecticidal fog or smoke generator as this is most effective. It is important to make sure there are no resident bats in your property or business before employing any eradication methods and we’re experienced in spotting evidence of bats so it’s always better to get a professional pest controller in rather than trying to treat the problem yourself. And, once the problem has been treated if you want some help in cleaning and removing the pest waste in a hygienic and efficient way, we can help with that too – ask us about our pest waste cleaning and removal services. • The Dangers of DIY Pest Control: 5 Reasons Why you Should Rethink it

Does DIY Pest Control Work? This week we’re taking a look at DIY pest control. A pest controller s' ‘phone regularly rings with stories from customers who’ve tried unsuccessfully to deal with a pest control problem themselves. Often, we’ll get calls from people who started with a small pest issue that they attempted to handle themselves with various potions they’ve purchased off the internet only to find that they haven’t solved the pest issue, the infestation has got significantly worse and they’re now out of pocket! We popped into a well-known national DIY store recently to check out the DIY pest control products on the market and were amazed at how many products were out there. There were literally dozens on the shelves and when we looked on the internet they run into thousands. Top 5 Reasons Why you Should be Wary about Undertaking DIY Pest Control Yourself You don’t know what you’re doing. Unless you’ve been trained to the same standards as professional pest controllers, it’s unlikely you’ll have the same knowledge and, more importantly, experience as they do. This knowledge, training and experience is essential for resolving pest problems quickly, effectively and humanely. You don’t know what you’re buying. Whilst products in reputable stores which have been through rigorous approval processes might be okay, the internet is an unregulated space and it’s very easy to buy a box or can of something with very little idea of what’s actually in it or whether it has passed, or even been through, a quality control process. You don’t know what you’re eradicating. Professional pest controllers are trained to carry out risk assessments and follow codes of practice to ensure that non-target species aren’t harmed when controlling pests . Imagine how horrified most of you would be to find out that in eradicating the pesky rats in your garden at the same time you accidentally poisoned your family pet, a barn owl or other non-target species. You might make the situation worse. There are various reasons why you might inadvertently make the situation worse but just a couple are that your DIY pest control may not work or work effectively meaning that you could very quickly increase a pest population over a short period of time. Also, some pests are resistant to some chemicals and the more DIY chemicals used, the more the pests evolve to become resistant and that’s a problem for us all! You could spend more in the long run. A pest treatment might seem expensive to you but consider this, repeatedly purchasing DIY products that don’t deal with the issue will soon add up. And, some pests have the ability to cause significant damage. An electric cable gnawed by mice or rats is not only dangerous but could prove costly to put right. And, our wood boring friends such as the Death Watch beetle , have the capacity to cause serious structural problems to properties. DIY PEST CONTROL Tips that WON’T COST A PENNY! Keep your windows and doors shut from pests. Remove your rubbish regularly and keep your bin lids on. Clear up spills and leftovers as soon as you’ve finished eating. Practice good hygiene , clean surfaces regularly; hoover and mop floors. Avoid buying natural fibres that might attract certain pests such as woollen rugs. Move things around your garden regularly to keep the rats on their toes – rats are neo-phobic which means they have a fear of new objects! Keep your garden tidy and cut back. DIY pest control can be a tempting option for homeowners looking to save money and take matters into their own hands. There are several reasons why DIY pest control is a bad idea: Lack of expertise: Pest control professionals have the training and experience to accurately identify pests and determine the best course of action for treatment. DIY solutions may not effectively target the specific type of pest, leading to continued infestations. Ineffective treatment: Pesticides and other pest control methods can be dangerous if not used properly. DIY treatments may not be applied correctly, leading to ineffective results or even harm to humans and pets. Health and safety concerns:  Pesticides and other pest control chemicals can be toxic and may pose a risk to humans and pets if handled improperly. Professionals are trained to safely handle and apply these products to minimize the risk of exposure. Damage to property: Improper application of pest control methods can result in damage to your home or yard. For example, using too much pesticide can kill plants or damage lawns. Legal issues:  In some cases, it may be illegal to use certain pest control methods or products without the proper training or licensing. Conclusion: While DIY pest control may seem like a cost-effective solution, it is often more effective and safer to hire a professional pest control company. If you are experiencing a pest issue then give your local pest controller a call. A professional pest controller will be happy to discuss the issue with you and explore the best options for dealing with your pest problem. • The difference between Bees, Wasps and Hornets

This week we’re looking at the differences between these buzzing insects. Bees, Wasps and Hornets. Bees There’s a lot of different species of bee but the most common, and loved ones, in the UK are the bumble bee and the honey bee. Bees are massively important to our ecosystem. They are pollinators which essentially helps our food supplies in the UK. Bees pollinate around a third of what we eat. Bees are fascinating creatures, storing their honey in complex hives made from wax which you might better know as honeycomb. These bees are golden in colour with tiny hairs all over that give them a fuzzy look. Bees are happy to go about their business undisturbed. They won’t normally bother you if you don’t bother them. If a bee is threatened it may sting but this is rare because once a bee has stung you, it’s sting comes away from its body and it dies. Sometimes feral swarms can set up home in chimneys and wall cavities which can present problems so if you do have a swarm i t’s best to contact a bee keeper or a qualified pest controller . Wasps Whilst wasps are early pollinators they main function is to act as a natural predator. There are many thousands of wasp species so it can be difficult to differentiate between them. Wasps are often considered a pest because they build nests close to places which the public frequent such as restaurants and cafes and also in gardens. Some people are allergic to wasp stings which makes them even more of a public health issue. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. If not treated quickly it can be fatal. If you see someone with symptoms you should call for an ambulance immediately – dial 999. Unlike bees, wasps don’t die when they sting. Like bees, they won’t normally attack unless they feel threatened however, if they do they can (and will) sting multiple times – ouch! And wasps will also call for back up by sending out a pheromone which signals to other wasps they need help. Getting stung by multiple wasps can be very serious which is why we recommend you don’t try to treat or remove a wasp nest yourself. Always call a professional pest controller who is trained to deal with wasps. Pest c ontrollers use special equipment to protect themselves. Hornets It is unlikely you will see a hornet as they are not a common sight. However, they are the heavyweight of the wasp world – coming in at twice the size of a wasp they can look very frightening! Our native hornet is the European Hornet which has brown and yellow markings. Asian hornets are slightly smaller and have black or dark brown markings with a distinct yellow band at the rear, a bright yellow belt at the waist and a black head with an orange or yellow face. They are not native to the UK and are an invasive predatory species which could have a destructive impact on our wildlife. Hornet stings are often more painful due to the level of venom in their sting. If you think you have a hornet nest or if you spot a hornet give PGM & SON a call, we remove hornets and report. It is important to be aware of the differences between bees, wasps, and hornets. This will help you to avoid being stung and to take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your family from these insects. As there are so many different types of wasp and bee, the best thing to do if you are concerned about a buzzing insect is to give PGM & Son Pest Control a call. We’ll identify the species and determine what risk it poses. We’ll give advice and solutions on handling all your wasp, bee and hornet problems.
