This week we’re bringing you the fascinating fact that Medieval Europeans tried animals, including pests, in a court of law. Inspired by the Courtyard’s Youth Theatre, we thought we’d share some facts and stories with you. In Europe, in the Middle Ages, it was common to bring animals and pests to court and have them tried for crimes such as destroying crops and they could face sentences such as gruesome mutilation to excommunication. WOW! that’s seriously unjust isn’t it?! Larger animals were tried for serious offences such as murder and were usually executed or exiled. Smaller pests were often excommunicated or denounced by a church tribunal. Because pests were considered to be God’s creatures an instruction from the church lessened the guilt of having the pests exterminated. SOME INTERESTING HISTORICAL CASES:- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the 1480s the Cardinal Bishop of Autun in France ruled against slugs which had ruined estate grounds under his jurisdiction. He ordered three days of daily processions where slugs were told to leave the area or be cursed, which gave the go ahead for extermination. And larger animals were often brought to stand trial where the sentences were severe. In 1508, the town of Autun decided they’d had enough of rats eating their crops and brought the case to trial: The Township of Autun versus Johns and Janes Doe, also known as rats or “les rats”. The charge? The said rats ate or destroyed the barley crop of local farmers. On the first day of the trial, the rats failed to appear! The rats’ legal aid lawyer (I know, it’s quite unbelievable!) pointed out to the court that the summons was invalid as his clients were not pack animals and tended to live alone and that each one of his clients had to be served an individual summons. Summons were posted in the churches in all neighbouring towns, but the rats failed to appear at the second citation and so were in contempt of court again. The rats’ lawyer argued that the route to court was unsafe for his clients as it was fraught with danger being frequented by cats, dogs and people. The rule of law (as today for human defendants) was that if the accused cannot be assured of personal safety in attending court to answer the charges then they may be excused. There’s no recorded outcome of the case but it is widely thought that the rats must have been acquitted. In modern times, most criminal justice systems consider that non-human creatures do not have the ability to make moral judgments and so cannot be held culpable for an act. Rather sensible, don’t you think? We think the sentences for those pests were rather harsh when they are simply doing what comes naturally to them. If you’ve seen rats or mice in or around your property call in the pest controllers to deal with the problem. Don’t let a rodent problem go untreated because rodents multiply rapidly and the problem will be much harder to control, cost more money and cause more damage to your property. It’s important to address the problem early and to future proof your home or business to minimise the risk of another rodent infestation. The reason for this is that we need to see how big the infestation is, what access issues and risk factors there may be at your property. We can normally treat smaller rodent infestations in 3 visits. At the first visit we’ll assess the extent of the infestation and install bait stations. At the second visit, we’ll check on activity, re-setting any traps or topping up bait as required. We usually find that smaller infestations are eradicated at this point. The warm weather in Herefordshire and Worcestershire over Easter has prompted an early onset of wasps – this week we were called out to look at a wasp issue only to discover no less than five nests at one property! This came as a bit of a surprise to us as we weren’t expecting to see such established colonies all in one place. Queens emerge from hibernation around this time of year. However, the warm weather has activated them earlier than usual and, once they emerge from hibernation, they start to populate new colonies. And, with a nest producing around one hundred Queens a season you can see how an explosive wasp season might be in store for Herefordshire and Worcestershire residents in 2019. Of all the stinging insects, wasps are the most aggressive. Whilst wasps won’t go out of their way to sting you, they can and do sting with very little provocation. If you get too close to a wasp nest or agitate them, you may expect to be on the end of a sting. What to look out for if you’ve been stung by a wasp? Wasp sting symptoms may include swelling around the sting site for around 24 hours or more, itchiness, a sharp burning pain and a visible mark or welt where the wasp’s stinger punctured the skin. What to do if you’ve been stung by a wasp? Make sure you properly clean the area with soap and water to remove the venom. If needed, apply an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and take an over-the-counter antihistamine. You can also raise the affected area; elevating it can help to reduce swelling. It’s also best not to scratch the area affected as this can lead to infections and cause more issues. If your symptoms don’t improve over the next few days or you’re worried about a wasp sting or the wound becomes infected (for example pus, increased pain / swelling / redness) then contact your GP or call NHS 111 for advice. Wasp sting allergies Where someone’s body reacts adversely to a wasp sting, they can experience an allergic reaction. In some cases, an allergy can become quite serious; in rare cases fatal. If you or someone you’re with is stung by a wasp or wasps and experience any of the following symptoms you should seek medical immediate help: Swelling of the face, lips or throat (anaphylaxis), difficulty swallowing Dizziness Hives or itchiness in areas of the body not directly affected by the sting Feeling lightheaded and nauseous or vomiting Loss of consciousness Stomach cramps Sudden drop in blood pressure, weak or racing pulse or fast heart rate Wheezing, breathing difficulties Dial 999 for an ambulance if you or someone else displays signs of a severe reaction.
