If you watched the item on watchdog this week about the firm in Essex, which purports to be a local firm, you’ll probably have been as outraged as we were. Watchdog reported that the company buys local telephone numbers and advertises in different post code areas to give consumers the impression that they are in fact a local firm. This gives the impression to an individual that they are dealing with a local firm but the reality is far from this and the programme highlighted the problems encountered by consumers. At PGM & Son we regularly blog about rodent control and we also blog about the importance of preventative pest control. You might also hear us refer to ‘proofing’ which is the word we use when we carry out works to assist with prevention of pests. This week we thought we’d give you an insight into why we champion education and preventative measures in rodent control. We’ve had one of the coldest winters for many years and this is one of reasons we’ve seen a rise in the rat population. They’ve been inviting themselves into people’s homes and businesses to keep warm, find food and harbourage. Rodents are building up a tolerance to pesticides and it isn’t ethical to regularly use poisons anyway. At PGM Pest Control we always use chemicals as a last resort. In many cases, we can offer advice and solutions that avoid the need for toxic chemicals to be used in homes and businesses but it’s important to identify and deal with the problem early on. And, if you need any convincing about why we strongly urge people to contact us as soon as they became aware of a problem, the photos below should help. By the time we arrived, rodents had firmly established themselves in the property and the whole loft had to be cleared – all insulation had to be removed and destroyed to ensure no contamination risk remained. As you might imagine, this can end up being a very costly exercise. Working at height and in confined spaces is a two man job due to health and safety regulations, disposal of insulation incurs an additional cost due to the sheer volume of material removed from loft spaces and there’s the cost of replacing the insulation too. Sometimes we get called out because a pest problem has persisted despite the diligence of the person in appointing other pest control services. Unfortunately, not all pest control firms share our views on use of chemicals and we often see cases where although the problem has been treated, it hasn’t been eradicated because the root causes haven’t been addressed. At this time of year, many homes experience higher levels of damp and mould caused by cranking the heating up, keeping the windows closed and drying clothes indoors. This causes condensation which has no-where the escape and that’s when you might see damp and mould on walls and around window frames in particular. It can also be a big problem in the loft as lots of newer homes benefit from insulation which is great for keeping warm but not so good for dispersing condensation. Like damp and mould, insects and bugs thrive in warm conditions where a water source is available. And, many insects, such as cockroaches, like to feast on soggy wood and wallpaper that the damp produces. There’s a few simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of damp, mould and bugs: 1. Keep all rooms to a steady low temperature – it doesn’t help keep changing the temperature frequently from room to room. 2. Air the property properly – if it’s too cold to open the windows make sure you are opening up any vents and making use of air bricks. 3. Keep your loft space as clear as possible particularly if you have thick insulation and an open water tank – consider covering the water tank to avoid further condensation. 4. Use a clothes’ horse to dry your laundry rather than covering up all the radiators. 5. Make good use of your cooker hood and bathroom ventilator. And, if you use a de-humidifier then don’t rely on it as a long term method of fixing the problem as it’s only masking it. 6. Seek professional advice to treat damp and mould. Marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the famous Tower of London poppies have moved to Hereford Cathedral in the iconic display Poppies: Weeping Window. The sculpture, by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, is free and open to the public from 14 March 2018 to 29 April 2018.
