  • Hereford Hotels – Don’t Let Bed Bugs Ruin Your Reputation!

A 2017 survey reported that a massive 60% of travellers said that they would be very unlikely to choose a hotel which has a single online report of bed bugs. And, with online reviews playing an increasingly major role in travellers’ decisions to book hotel accommodation, the hospitality industry needs to look to pest control professionals for advice, support and comprehensive pest preventative and pest monitoring solutions. TripAdvisor reports that 80% of travellers read 6-12 reviews before selecting a hotel on their site. And when comparing other hotel problems such as dirty sheets or towels, smoking and other odours, evidence of bed bugs is much more likely to cause customers to move hotels and demand a refund. Did you know that bed bugs aren’t a quality or cleanliness issue? Even 5 star hotels can be affected. With the UK offering around 730,000 hotel rooms and occupancy rates at around 75%+ there are well over half a million hotel rooms in use every night generating a revenue of around £14.5b per annum. Hotels are big business but bed bugs are not good for business! Bed Bug Prevention is Better than Cure If you are a Herefordshire accommodation provider take the 5 step challenge below: If you had a bed bug infestation would your staff know how to respond; would they know how to prevent the spread of bed bugs throughout your hotel? Would you want your rooms out of action (potentially multiple rooms at a time) for up to 10 days whilst bed bugs are being treated? Do you want bad reviews of your hotel? Do your cleaning and maintenance staff know how to spot bed bugs? Can you afford to lose up to 60%, or more, of your business due to bed bugs? If you’ve answered no to at least 4 of these questions then we suggest you pick up the phone and call a professional pest controller. We tailor our pest control services to your establishment but typically, for hotels, we offer a comprehensive bed bug control program, which includes: * Training your staff to identify bed bugs * Giving advice and guidance on the prevention of bed bug infestations spreading throughout your hotel * Regular monitoring to identify any potential infestation * And, if you are unlucky enough to have a bed bug infestation we’ll treat it discreetly for you enabling your business to continue with minimal disruption We’re always on the end of the ‘phone for help support or guidance, so don’t worry about your pest problems, give us a call today on 01981 540088 or email contact@pgmpestcontrol.co.uk  or you can use the live chat facility on the right hand side of your screen.

  • How to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Cockroaches pose a health risk to humans. They carry disease which can cause food poisoning in humans and many other bacteria. Finding that you have cockroaches in your home or business can be very distressing and cockroaches can be very difficult to control due to their life cycle. The main reason to control cockroaches is because they pose a threat to public health. Cockroaches carry disease and as they forage for food they will move through sewers and drains into houses and businesses contaminating everything they meet. Cockroaches spew partially digested food along the way and the drop their faeces meaning that they are contaminating everything they touch which may include food, crockery, work surfaces, utensils and other items. Regulations and laws related to cockroach control Legal problems! For highly regulated businesses such as those serving food and drink to the public, can also face serious problems such as fines, public censure and, ultimately, closure. Reputational damage! Customers may well demand a refund if they see a cockroach in your business and they might also leave negative reviews. In this era of social media this means that bad news can travel very quickly to many people. A cockroach infestation can ruin a business’ reputation. Cockroach fact Katsaridaphobia is the fear of cockroaches. Where to find a cockroach Cockroaches don’t generally like the British climate and so you mostly find them indoors. Some species are hardier and may be found outside, for example, the Oriental cockroach. German cockroaches prefer higher temperatures and humidity and so key places to watch out for cockroaches are kitchens where there are appliances emitting warmth from their motors such as ovens and cookers. Similarly in utility rooms and laundries where behind tumble driers can prove a great place for cockroaches to harbour. Another place you might commonly see cockroaches is in bathrooms around pipes and sinks. Bathrooms are often high humidity areas which is a prime place for a cockroach. As cockroaches are nocturnal you may not normally see them in the daytime however there are other signs for a cockroach infestation such as droppings, eggs and skins which have been shed. Cockroaches also smell very bad! Cockroach fact Did you know that cockroaches are thought to date back to cavemen times due to fossil evidence found. So even Fred Flintstone and the family had to deal with cockroach infestations! Cockroach Control – Prevention or Cure? At PGM & Son Pest Control we promote the #preventionbetterthancure approach. There are some simple things you can do to prevent cockroaches: Shut those bins! Empty them regularly and keep them clean Practice good hygiene – thoroughly clean work surfaces and remove discarded food. Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink and make sure the teenagers put their crockery away (after cleaning it of course!) No-one likes doing this job – clean regularly behind appliances and particularly ones which offer a warm environment for the cockroach Repairs leaky sinks and pipes to cut of potential water sources Secure entry points – that’s right, simple measures such as sealing entry points and gaps can help with stopping cockroaches from becoming a nuisance in your home or business Monitor – if you think you may have cockroaches you can monitor the situation – call PGM & Son Pest Control to see what monitoring aids we can assist with If all else fails If all else fails and you find yourself with a cockroach infestation you should consult a professional pest controller. • Why you shouldn’t worry about Bats

This week we’re taking a look at bats. Bats often get a bad press and people can be wary, or even scared, of bats but bats are a protected species and so it is important for the public to be aware of this and to understand that you can live in harmony with your bats. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 provides protection for all species of bat found in the United Kingdom. Signs you may have Bats Many householders go for years unaware they have bats. Signs of bats can include: Bat droppings on windows, walls or sills. Bats may be visible on ridge beams inside the roof void and often tucked away from sight. Chattering sounds bats make at dusk before flying out to feed. During Summer months you may see bats emerging when they come out to feed around dusk time. What Should You Do If You Suspect Bats in Your Home? Don’t disturb them or block entry points. Contact your local bat group or the Bat Conservation Trust. Seek professional advice if you're planning renovation work near a bat roost. The important thing to remember is not to disturb your bats. Do NOT shine lights up at the ridge to look for them. Why you Must Not Touch, or Disturb Bats It is illegal to kill, or even disturb, bats in their roost. Bats can only be handled by those with a license to do so. Won’t Bats cause damage to my property? Bats aren’t rodents so they don’t gnaw wire, pipes, insulation or wood. They don’t build nests or bring prey into their roost. Bats are clean animals. Tips for living with Bats You should cover your water tank to prevent any bats from drowning. Cover any stored items with a dust sheet (but not plastic) to protect items from bat droppings. If you have cats, bring them in for the night half an hour before sunset so that bats can emerge from their roosts undisturbed. NEVER try to catch a flying bat, it is likely that you will cause serious injury to it and you may even receive a bite in self-defence! Visit www.bats.org.uk for information about living with bats and advice and tips on wildlife-friendly gardening, bat boxes and how to identify bat species. Are you having a problem with Bats? If you are having a problem with bats or you’ve come across an injured bat, you should contact The Bat Conservation Trust or call their helpline on 0345 1300 228 . They will give you advice and they can arrange for a specialist to visit your property to advise you on the best course of action, where necessary. FAQs about Bats Q: Are bats protected in the UK? A: Yes. All bat species and their roosts are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017. Q: Can pest control remove bats? A: Pest controllers cannot remove bats without a licence. You must contact organisations like Natural England for advice if bats are roosting in your property. Q: Do bats pose a health risk? A: Bats in the UK rarely carry rabies. While the risk is very low, it’s advised not to handle them directly. Q: What signs indicate bats in the loft? A: Common signs include droppings, squeaking sounds at dusk, or spotting them flying in/out around sunset. Q: Will bats damage my home? A: No. Bats do not gnaw on materials or cause structural damage like rodents. Need Help After a Bat Roost Has Moved On? While bats don’t cause damage like rodents, they can leave behind mess in your loft space. If you're left with droppings or debris after a roost has moved on, our Loft Clearance service can help restore your loft to a safe, clean condition. We safely remove waste, disinfect affected areas, and make the space usable again. If you’re unsure whether the noise in your loft is caused by bats or something more destructive like rats or mice, our Rodent Control specialists can inspect the space and resolve any rodent issues quickly, using safe and humane methods. #MakePestControlGreenAgain About PGM Pest Control PGM Pest Control is an award-winning pest control company based in the UK, offering trusted, effective, and environmentally responsible services for homes and businesses accross all towns and villages across Herefordshire and Worcestershire . • Responsible Pest Control in Herefordshire & Worcestershire: Our Commitment to the CRRU Code

🎧 Prefer to listen? Here’s the audio version of this article. At PGM and Son pest control services, we proudly serve the homes and businesses in all local towns and villages across counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire with award-winning pest control services. Beyond simply managing pests, we are fully committed to the highest standards of environmental care and safety, strictly following the UK’s Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) Code of Best Practice . CRRU promotes responsible use through a seven point Code of Practice Why Responsible Pest Control Matters for Homes & Businesses Rodents pose considerable risks to health, food safety, and property. However, using rodenticides without care can harm pets, wildlife, and the wider environment. That’s why responsible pest control is essential—not only to effectively manage pests but to protect the delicate ecosystems unique to our region. Since 1 January 2025, legislation aligned with CRRU requires that second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) cannot be used in open areas away from buildings. We have fully adopted these regulations, ensuring safer, more targeted treatments that minimise risks to non-target wildlife such as barn owls and foxes. Adhering to the CRRU Code of Best Practice The CRRU Code sets out seven key principles for effective and safe rodent control, prioritising Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and stewardship. Our practices include: Employing IPM techniques first: environmental proofing, sanitation, traps, and habitat modification. Using rodenticides only when necessary and in the correct manner, following CRRU guidelines. Ensuring all rodenticide applications are carried out by CRRU-certified professionals trained in the latest best practice. Maintaining clear records, c ontinual monitoring, and compliance checks to guarantee adherence to the Code. Latest CRRU UK Code of Best Practice 2024 Update and Preparing for 2026 Amendments The 2024 update to the CRRU Code introduced significant regulatory changes that shape responsible rodenticide use across the UK. Key highlights include: The ban on the open-area use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) from 1 January 2025, restricting their use strictly to areas linked to buildings to protect wildlife. Clarification and tightening of rodenticide use protocols, emphasising correct product handling and risk mitigation. Reinforced commitment to Integrated Pest Management (IPM), where chemical controls are only applied after non-chemical methods. Enhanced requirements for bait station monitoring and environmental risk assessments to minimise secondary poisoning risks. Updated guidance on training, certification, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to uphold practitioner competency. Forewarning of forthcoming 2026 amendments which may include further certification and CPD requirements, ensuring readiness for evolving best practices. Our company actively embraces these updates, maintaining rigorous compliance and preparing for future regulatory changes to continue delivering safe, effective, and environmentally responsible pest control. Environmental Protection and Wildlife Care Protecting our local wildlife is integral to our service. We use tamper-resistant bait stations, conduct thorough environmental assessments, and work closely with conservation groups to monitor and reduce non-target exposure to rodenticides. Our commitment ensures pest control solutions that are effective yet considerate of biodiversity, preserving the rich populations of wildlife found in Herefordshire and Worcestershire . Expert Technicians: CRRU Certified and Professionally Trained Our team members undergo rigorous, ongoing training and hold up-to-date CRRU certification. This ensures every technician applies the latest safe and environmentally sound rodent control methods. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) keeps our workforce informed about emerging regulatory changes and evolving pest management strategies, maintaining excellence in service delivery. Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Prevention First Our IPM approach focuses on: Identifying and verifying pest activity through detailed inspections. Proofing premises to block access points. Encouraging good hygiene and waste management to reduce attractants. Employing mechanical controls like traps and shooting before using any chemical treatments. Rodenticides are strictly a last resort option, applied only under CRRU-approved conditions. Safe Rodenticide Use and Compliance We deploy rodenticides responsibly by: Using only CRRU-approved products in secure bait stations. Monitoring bait consumption closely and removing any uneaten bait promptly. Rotating products to reduce resistance risks. Adhering fully to product labels, safety data sheets, and all relevant legislation. Every treatment is logged meticulously to ensure transparent tracking and accountability. Read our Frequently Asked Questions Signs You May Have a Wasp Nest There is probably a nest nearby if there are a lot of wasps in your house or garden. In the summer, a mature nest may house a large number of wasps. To lessen the risk of a wasp sting, which can be extremely painful and even result in an allergic reaction, it is crucial to treat a wasp nest as soon as possible. What is The Cost of Removing a Wasp Nest? The general price guide for having a wasp nest removal service is from £65.00, depending on your location in the UK. Will Wasps Return to a Removed Nest? Large nests are unlikely to be active in the early spring and summer since wasps never reuse an old nest from a previous year. However, if the area is favorable, wasps may come back and establish a new nest there. What Month do Wasps Go Away? With the onset of cold weather, the workers and the resident queen all die. Again the timing of this can vary enormously and be anywhere from October to December , normally the first ground frost is regarded as the point from which the nest will rapidly die off. Why Remove a Wasp Nest? You won't easily forget a wasp sting if you've ever experienced one. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that a wasp problem at work will be an unwelcome distraction for both clients and staff. You must resolve the problem as soon as you can in order to prevent it from interfering with your business. The good news is that all you need to do is phone us; we'll take care of the rest right away. How Long are Wasps Active in the UK? In the United Kingdom, the wasp season typically begins in April and subsides in September. A wasp colony is primarily active during the summer months between June and August, with hibernating queens exiting a nest within the first two weeks of autumn. How Long Does it Take to Remove a Wasp Nest? It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to treat a wasps' nest, depending on the location of the nest. • Green Pest Control – How to be Pest Aware

The PGM & SON green pest control approach has its roots in prevention and monitoring with a minimum reliance on chemical treatments. We actively promote our environmentally friendly approach , regularly blog about sustainable pest control measures and always put education above eradication. And, we're keen to educate our customers and assist with proofing and preventative works to minimise the effect on the environment, your home, wildlife and other non target species. That's got to be a good thing!! What does Integrated Pest Management mean? Integrated pest management involves the use of proactive measures to minimise, and even remove, the risk of pest infestations. By adopting a proactive integrated pest management approach, it’s possible to work towards a pesticide-free pest control meaning that many pest problems can be reduced or even completely eliminated. The BPCA defines Integrated Pest Management as a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools in a way that minimise economic, health and environmental risks. What is the benefit of Integrated Pest Management? Pest prevention is better than cure. It adopts approaches with minimum use of chemicals resulting in less risk to non-target species and low environmental impact. What is Green Pest Control all about? We define green pest control as the use of chemical as a last resort approach. Unfortunately, all too often, we find a pest problem has got completely out of hand either because clients have tried DIY methods without success, or because they haven’t faced the problem early enough. This can be for several reasons, such as: Shame – it is common for people to feel embarrassed about a pest problem and this is quite a normal reaction. However, in many cases, pest infestations can be caused by external factors. Pest controllers are used to hearing reports of pests so no-one should feel embarrassed or ashamed to own up to a pest problem. Once a pest problem has been reported, your pest controller can work with you to eradicate the problem and ensure it won’t happen again. Cost – often people think a pest problem will be costly to resolve and this can be true if left untreated. An untreated pest problem may create significant additional costs where a pest infestation has increased significantly, or the pest has caused other damage to property. For example, mice can cause electrical damage by gnawing on wires and wood boring insects can cause structural damage by boring through joists. Reluctance – some businesses in particular may be reluctant to report a pest problem because of perceived damage to business interests such as having to close their business for a period to treat the problem or inviting attention from Environmental Health. However, leaving a pest problem untreated can cause significant additional damage to a business including loss of revenue, reputational damage and, at the worst-case scenario, closure and fines for breaches of public health laws. But How Can Pests Be Controlled in a Safe Way There are several green control methods that can be used, some examples include: Physical Control - The most efficient and green control method is to keep the pests out in the first place. Use of methods such as fitting fly screens to reduce flying insect ingress is an example of a physical control measure. External proofing - Preservation of the exterior of a site is essential to green pest control. For example, installing discreet netting to prevent bird guano from building up in gutters and downpipes. Non-toxic treatments - Rodents can be controlled by use of non-toxic methods such as monitoring bait for early identification of a problem or by use of trapping to avoid the harmful effects of toxic bait to the environment or non-target species. Heat and cold - Heat and cold controls can be used effectively for insect infestations, for example, bedbugs. Integrated Pest Management will not work unless there is active buy in from both the pest controller and the client. Pest control must be given a high level of importance. It should be seen as a protection to a business and not a lower priority. “In my experience, the main reason for failure in controlling an infestation is lack of client awareness of their responsibilities. Many building owners assume they simply hire a contractor to deal with the problem, but change must come from within as well.” Dee Ward Thompson, BPCA Technical Manager The key message is: Control Not Eradicate About PGM Pest Control PGM Pest Control  is an award-winning pest control company based in the UK, offering trusted, effective, and environmentally responsible services for homes and businesses. • Thrips: Understanding the Pest

This week we’re taking a look at the commonly called “ Thunder Fly ” . These tiny insects are actually called Thrips and are black in colour and narrow with hairy wings measuring around 1.5mm. Thunder Flies Thrips are largely an agricultural pest which is why Herefordshire and Worcestershire residents often report problems with Thunder Flies as our rural county has vast amounts of fields and agricultural properties. So how do these insects cause problems in residential properties and business premises? Well, they have been known to collect in significant numbers inside smoke detectors and this can trigger fire alarms to go off. Thrips feed on plant sap and on hot and humid days they congregate on window sills in large numbers. With climatic changes, these insects become more of a problem and can get into clothing and hair. This is largely a nuisance pest however and a small thrip infestation can normally be dealt with easily by the householder simply removing them from the property. However, a significant infestation of thunder flies would better be solved by a professional pest controller who has access to professional treatments to solve pest problems. Thrips Biology & Lifecycle Understanding how thrips develop is key to stopping infestations before they bloom. Egg-Laying Habits & Host Preference - Thrips lay eggs inside leaf tissue or within flower buds, making detection tricky. - Preferred hosts include tomatoes, cucumbers, chrysanthemums, and fuchsias, especially in warm, protected environments. - Eggs hatch in 2–7 days, depending on temperature. Nymph Stages & Development Timeline - Nymphs go through 2 instars (growth stages) before dropping into soil or leaf litter to pupate. - They resemble adults but lack wings—often pale yellow or green. - Total lifecycle from egg to adult takes 7–14 days in summer, faster in warm, dry conditions. Seasonal Activity in the UK - Peak thrips activity typically spans May to September, with spikes during prolonged dry spells. - Warm greenhouses, conservatories, and polytunnels can sustain populations year-round. - Early symptoms (leaf silvering, flower damage) often appear mid-May. Thrips thrive when summer skies stay dry! Overwintering Behaviour & Survival - Thrips overwinter in soil, mulch, leaf litter, or tucked within greenhouse structures. - Some species can survive in unheated indoor environments, re-emerging with spring warmth. - Cleaning up plant debris and controlling indoor conditions helps interrupt their cycle. Monitoring & Identification of Thrips Early detection is the key to managing thrips before damage spreads. Here's how to keep an eye on these elusive pests: Colour Traps & Visual Tools - Sticky Traps : Hang yellow or blue traps near susceptible plants. Yellow is great for general attraction; blue is especially effective for Western Flower Thrips. - Magnification Aids : Use a pocket magnifier or loupe (x10–x15) to inspect undersides of leaves, buds, and flower crevices where thrips often hide. Behavioural Cues - Erratic Movement : Unlike aphids or mites, thrips twitch and scuttle rapidly when disturbed. - Hiding in Blooms : Pay close attention to tightly packed petals—thrips love to burrow inside flowering heads. - Silvering & Flecking : These visual symptoms often precede visible insect presence—consider them an early red flag. DIY Thrips Monitoring Checklist For weekly use during the growing season (May–Sept): ✅ Check underside of leaves using magnifier. ✅ Inspect flower buds and blooms for hidden thrips. ✅ Note silvering, flecking, distorted growth. ✅ Replace sticky traps every 1–2 weeks. ✅ Record sightings and symptom locations. ✅ Isolate any suspicious plants for further monitoring. Pest Pro Tip: Turn this checklist into a laminated card or downloadable PDF for greenhouse or allotment use. Climate Change & Environmental Considerations Thrips may be tiny, but their behaviour is shaped by global shifts. Climate Impact on Thrips Populations - Hotter summers and prolonged dry spells accelerate thrips breeding cycles and spread. - Warmer winters mean fewer die-offs, allowing populations to rebound more aggressively in spring. - Greenhouses and indoor plant areas are particularly vulnerable during extreme heat events. If you’ve noticed more thrips year-on-year…you’re not imagining it. Eco-Friendly Alternatives to Chemical Control - Use biological predators like Orius insidiosus (minute pirate bug) or Amblyseius cucumeris (predatory mite). - Spray neem oil, insecticidal soap, or homemade garlic-chilli sprays to deter feeding. - Companion planting (e.g. basil near tomato) can confuse or repel thrips naturally. - Growers are shifting toward IPM strategies that blend natural controls with observation. Neonicotinoid Risks to Pollinators - Common thrips-targeting insecticides like acetamiprid and imidacloprid (neonics) pose risks to bees, hoverflies, and butterflies. - Residues can accumulate in nectar and pollen, affecting non-target insects. - The UK restricts some neonics under pollinator protection schemes—but vigilance is key. Be kind to pollinators—choose selective, low-toxicity treatments. There are several reasons why people should hire a pest control company to get rid of thrips: Expertise : Pest control companies, like us, have trained professionals who have the knowledge and experience to effectively identify and control thrips infestations. A qualified pest controller will be able to determine the severity of the infestation, the type of thrips present and develop a plan to address the infestation. Safety : Pest control companies use professional-grade pesticides and equipment that are not available to the general public. These products are specially formulated to target specific pests and are applied by trained professionals who know how to handle them safely. Efficiency : Registered pest control companies have access to a wide range of tools and techniques to quickly and effectively eliminate thrips infestations. They may use different type of pesticides, integrate pest management techniques, and use equipment that is specifically designed for thrips control. Cost-effective : Hiring a pest control company can save you money in the long run. They will be able to quickly and effectively eliminate the infestation, reducing the need for repeated treatments and minimising crop damage. Monitoring : A pest control company will also monitor the infestation and will advise further on how to prevent future infestations. They may also provide an ongoing preventative service to ensure that thrips populations do not reach damaging levels again. Frequently Asked Questions about Thrips What do thrips look like? Thrips are tiny, slender insects that can range in color from yellow to black. They have fringed wings and are usually less than 2 mm in length. What do thrips eat? Thrips feed on plant tissues, including leaves, flowers, and fruits. They use their sharp, needle-like mouthparts to pierce the surface of the plant and suck out the sap. How do thrips damage plants? Thrips can cause a variety of problems for plants, including discoloration, distorted growth, and reduced yields. They can also act as vectors for plant diseases. How do thrips reproduce? Thrips reproduce sexually, with females laying eggs on or in the plant tissue. The eggs hatch into tiny, wingless nymphs that resemble adults. Are thrips dangerous to humans or pets? Thrips are not dangerous to humans or pets, but they can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Conclusion Hiring a professional qualified pest control company  to get rid of thrips can provide peace of mind and save time and money in the long run. They can help to protect your plants and crops, prevent damage, and ensure that your farm or garden remains productive.
